ESPN: Sources: Selig successor decided next week

Mighty Manfred the Wonder Commissioner

Bud Selig’s successor as commissioner of baseball is expected to be decided next week, sources confirmed, when MLB owners assemble in Baltimore to vote on three finalists for the job.

The three final candidates, according to one source familiar with the vote, are MLB’s chief operating officer, Rob Manfred, MLB executive vice president for business Tim Brosnan and Boston Red Sox chairman Tom Werner…Manfred has long been viewed as the favorite to succeed Selig. However, a dissenting group, which sources say has been led by Chicago White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno, has nominated Werner for the job and has been working behind the scenes to rally the eight votes needed to block Manfred’s election.

But some of us thought the Red Sox already ran MLB, a la the O'Malleys 50 years ago.

OH CRAP I need to buy a suit.

Also, within 10 minutes of the announcement, I'd probably move as far away from Turner Field as possible.

But what about the names like Bob Costas and George W. Bush that I've heard that always get mentioned by media. These are just boring lawyer/businessman types!

why would Werner take the job?

It would cut out the middleman.

What is the dissidents' objection to Manfred? The article doesn't say.

I assume it's that Reinsdorf doesn't have Manfred in his back pocket. Moreno is just window-dressing. [/cynicism]

A mystery candidate named Giles will appear from nowhere looking suspiciously like Selig in a mustache.

Boston Red Sox chairman Tom Werner

I might stop following baseball if this happens. This guy screwed the Padres even moreso than Moores did. Absolutely cannot abide him.

Is there a random Air Force general who can be dropped in at the last minute?

Werner is a clown.

Werner is a clown.

As compared to Selig?

Has it really mattered who the Commissioner was at any time in the last 25 years?
