I'm currently running a full backup to a USB drive on my PS3. The system locked up on me a few weeks ago during a game save, corrupted the file, and I had to delete it. I'm not sure if my system is about ready to go, the HDD might fail, or it was just a random event. My system is 2nd generation, purchased 11 months after launch, so given the way electronics fail it could be time for it to go.
I learned though that a full system backup still won't preserve the copyright protected save files. So if my PS3 dies and I go buy a new one, those copyright saves won't migrate over. I either have to pay for Sony's cloud save service, or anticipate a failure and buy a 2nd system while my first one is running and let it essentially "clone" the machine over. Way to help your consumers there Sony. When the PS3 launched it was a great consumer friendly all-encompassing home entertainment center. Sony has done everything in their power to #### us costumers over since then.
That's just Sony being Sony.
This implies that the grass is real.
Yeah I realize that. The have quite a few skeletons in their closet, so to speak.
I've owned a PS1, PS2, and now a PS3 and overall have been really happy with their consoles and the library of games available for them. After seeing how the PS3 has (d)evolved over the years, I do think this is the last Sony console I'll ever purchase. If my PS3 dies tomorrow, I'll likely go purchase a replacement, as I have a decent backlog and library of games I still play, but I'm hardly interested in the PS4. Part of that is lifestyle changes and having less time to play. I can live with PC gaming for the few major releases in the future I'm interested in playing.
It's something that's fairly new, I first started noticing it in the last 12-18 months. The copyright protection is on a game-by-game basis. It's published intent is to prevent hacking and other balancing problems in online games, though it conveniently sales PSN+ subscriptions as well. Some companies have removed or added the feature as time went on.
For example, when I first got borderlans I could copy my characters save file to a USB drive and play that game on a friend's PS3 no problem. Sometime 6-9 months after it was launched, the saves were "locked" and could not be copied out to USB.
BTW, speaking of fighters, King of Fighters XIII is soooooooooooooooooooo good. I only paid $30 on it, and I already played for 20 hours.
This is the first generation of consoles were you cannot copy, backup, or play your saved games on another system.. all in the name of preserving trophies and potential hacking of saves. The PS3 didn't launch with this feature, and I'm not sure why Sony added it unless it was partially a money grab.
The only way to backup certain game data is to pay Sony (not the publisher/dev) to store it on a cloud server for people that have their console online.
I personally think "locked" saves also take away from the enjoyment of playing games with friends, but I'm likely in the minority here. I doubt many "gamers" get together for couch co-op anymore.
It's ironic. Like Urkel was ironic.
