ESPN Travel: Nosebleeders unite

“Welcome to the Rockpile!” came the usher’s voice at the top of the stairs, a vertical mile above sea level. “You found us.”

He grinned.

“Oh, you must know somebody. These are the best seats in the place!”

By the time we reached our aluminum bleacher in Coors Field’s last and highest row, we were 600 feet from home plate—the farthest seat in Major League Baseball.

Decent article and worth a read. I always wondered how far from home plate were the last upper deck corners of Shea, but guess we'll never know.

Having sat in those seats once (for Game Four of the 2000 World Series, no less) I can attest that it felt like I was watching the game from Forest Hills.

Brings back memories of the 700 level at the Vet -- not all of them good ones.

Priciest cheapest seats in baseball are the White Sox and Phillies, by a good measure. Surprising.

The farthest seats at Dodger stadium cost $13 more than seats one deck up, and right behind the plate ($7).

"It's a place to come when you want to enjoy baseball," Todd Bass, the father of four sitting next to us, said.

The problem is the rockpile seats are so remote and a lot of folks aren't watching the game. Though I guess that's an issue in any cheap area where there are lots of families. Grocery stores here sell discount tickets; for $10 you can sit in the upper deck in the sections behind home plate--those are better seats and are still pretty cheap. Later in the game you can move around if you want (whereas the Rockpile is isolated from the rest of the stadium).

The general admission upper deck at the Dome was a good value too, especially in the right field and left field sections that faced the infield. The first few rows in right field were particularly good, as they were close to the field too (although fairly high up). They were recently as cheap at $6, or under $3 per game for a season ticket, although they were up a few bucks by the end. And half-price on Wednesdays for students.

The $100 season tickets at the Metrodome about 8 or 10 years ago were pretty awesome, and they came with an autographed Kirby Puckett bat. That's when the face value on them were $4. It was substantially more expensive to park than it was to actually go to the game.

I was in Denver for business a few years ago and a group of us bought Rockpile tickets without seeing just how far up and away from the field they were. Luckily, there were about 2 dozen people in the lower level in the outfield and we were able to sit wherever we wanted.

I opted for the $5 seats at Kaufmann Stadium tomorrow night, in section 420 (right behind the plate), but a few rows from the top. How bad are those seats? Will we be able to just walk around the ballpark? It seemed pretty relaxed the last time I was there, but that was a few years ago.

Over a decade ago, I recall a story on the 10 worst seats in MLB, and #1 was some seat at Shea where you could see a sliver of the outfield and that was it, WTF?. Anybody remember where that seat was?

#2 was at County Stadium, lower grandstand RF side, and in row 36 to your immediate left was a brick wall, I think it housed a service area with a steep ladder to the bowels of the stadium. You could see the right fielder, the overhang blocked your view of that miserable scoreboard. I suppose for a Packers game you could see the south end zone.

Most of the others were seats directly behind a pole/pillar and one where the foul pole was directly in front of your seat and between your legs.

Must have been in the back rows of the loge or mezzanine levels, where the ceiling and attachments would overhang into the field of view. The upper deck could see everything at Shea (sure, the seats faced the centerfielder, but there was no obstruction to see everything, just neck cramps.)
