1. Excel Hearts Choi Posted: March 15, 2008 at 08:44 PM (#2713381)But, then I got to thinking. So many owners extract maximal profits from their teams, while putting only a minimal return into payroll, scouting, and drafting. This, however, can't be said of the Steinbrenners. In a way, Hank has a point, though he does not articulate it very well.
Hank's rant is pointless. In fact, Hank is pointless.
How? It sounds to me that he's saying that because the Yankees subsidizes the Rays and most of the league, that those teams have no business playing hard or complaining when the Yankees act like jackasses.
They certainly don't need the Royals, Rays or Marlins.
I'm merely referring to the fact that small market teams do benefit from the luxury taxes the Yankees are assessed, and that it's understandable that the person(s) who is paying out those funds would resent that such largesse could be used against their team's interests.
If that makes him a jackass, the word must have a meaning that I am familiar with. His feelings are reflective of a basic human nature.
It's like the <strike>WWF</strike> WWE. Everyone who dons Yankee pinstripes is a "Major League Superstar."
For example, Billy Crystal.
Schilling (D'backs), Beckett (Marlins), Lowell (Marlins), Manny (Indians), Crisp (Indians), Varitek (Mariners).
Before that: Pedro (Expos,) Foulke (A's), Lowe (Mariners)
Yup, the Yankees have a monopoly on having their talent cultivated by small market teams.
So he gets pissed if someone like Pohlad pockets the money and gets pissed if they use it to actually compete.
How DARE they!
How DARE they!
As I implied in my intial post, I think he should shut up, but his feelings, imo, are understandable.
Yeah, like the taxpayers of NY who are building a new stadium for the Yankees. (Yeah I know, the Yanks are contributing, but NY state and NY city are paying more.)
Hank Steinbrenner is a great argument for the estate tax.
I can't argue with that.
MLB (and the federal government, via the anti-trust exemption) subsidizes the Yankees by giving them a guaranteed duopoly over the largest, richest media market in North America.
Yeah, the Yankees get the better of that deal by far.
Jim Dolan is the posterboy.
I'm sure it does.
I'm not arguing your point so much here, as I am your accuracy. Firstly, Schilling was really "cultivated" by the Phillies... and that was only after being traded from Boston/Baltimore/Houston. None of which were small market.
Secondly, your timeline is all kinds of ###### up. Your first group should be Foulke, Schil, Becket, Lowell, Crisp. The earlier group should be Pedro, Lowe, Tek (who came with Lowe. can't understand why you broke them up to begin with,) and Manny.
This is an excellent point. A good followup next time he starts complaining about this would be to ask, "In exchange for no luxury tax, would you be willing to allow other AL or NL teams to move into the NYC metropolitan area?" Seems like a reasonable trade.
I'm not sure why Lowe and Varitek are grouped in here. They weren't FA signings. They were prospects the Red Sox picked up in exchange for Heathcliff Slocumb. Pretty much any team in the majors could have offered a reliever to the Mariners to get that package. Now they are obviously paying Varitek very well, so their resources allow them to do that.
Well, Tek and Lowe shouldn't be included at all. They were the young ballplayers received by the noncontending team in exchange for sending the proven veteran to the playoff hopeful. That said proven veteran was Heathcliff Slocumb is just an indictment of the Mariners' judgment, but not an example of the rich taking advantage of the poor.
Edit: Sean beat me to it.
Also, if he had his way, this would happen: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/27656 (Yankees sign every player).
Basically, they'd win 130 games a year, and many other team all over baseball would be crippled, losing the fans. Or, the owners would start going in the red, and have teams eventually shut down.
And Beckett and Lowell shouldn't be included, either, unless the Red Sox get Hanley Ramirez back in a few years for prospects.
Give it up, dude. Seriously.
I'll concede your point on Schilling, and although Baltimore and Houston may not be small market teams, they are, at least according to this assessment, mid-market teams.
The first grouping of players all played on the 2007 WS team; the second group included players that were on the 2004 WS team, but not on the 2007 team.
I was referring to the behavior of Duncan and Girardi -- both of whom have been jackasses. When the Rays call them on it, Steinbrenner has the audacity to say they shouldn't have the right to complain because they are taking luxury tax subsidies? WTF is that?
Here's the thing, Junior -- maybe if you decided not to resign ARod and half the 2002 AL All-Star team, perhaps you wouldn't be subsidizing them as much.
The Rays have won as many World Championships this century as the Yankees.
Yeah, the Yankees ownership needs to shut the fcuk up. They have the best economic set up in MLB along with the Mets and they know it.
OK. I have a different view of who was primarily at fault for the fight, but I am talked out about it from discussing it on other threads.
As for Hank, I prefer Hal.
Shock the world, Andy Sonnastine. Shock the world.
Ok, I see that. I looked to me like you were putting them together based on when they were obtained. My bad.
you know it's coming.
