ESPN:Stark:Time for year-end awards

AL MVP: Mike Trout

It’s been bizarre to sit back and watch the American League MVP debate unfold. There has never been anything like it….The reason Mike Trout should win this award is that he’s been the best—and most valuable—baseball player on this continent. That’s not a new-age concept. It’s as old-fashioned as it gets.

If you don’t feel like RingTFA, his other picks are Posey, Verlander, and Kimbrel(?!)

Shannon Stewart for mvp

I knew Stark would go Kimbrel; he loves unusual, unprecedented stats. Since there's only one of him, it's fine. Cool that he picked Verlander!

His other other picks are:

AL Least Valuable: Yunel Escobar
NL Least Valuable: Miami (as a team)
AL Cy Yuck: Ricky Romero
NL Cy Yuck: Heath Bell
AL Rookie: Trout
NL Rookie: Bryce Harper
AL Manager: Buck Showalter
NL Manager: Davey Johnson
AL GM: Billy Beane
NL GM: Mike Rizzo
AL Comeback: Adam Dunn
NL Comeback: Posey

Nitpicking his list, but I just don't see Jeter ahead of Cano.

Not sure what Stark is doing here, the Tigers would have surely missed the playoffs without Cabrera, the Angels missed the playoffs with Trout. So Cabrera wins. It's all spelled out in the Hack Baseball Writer 101 textbook.

Dunn is a fine choice for AL comeback considering that he put up one of the worst seasons of all time last year, but I'd go with Jeter there.

Jeter for comeback player? What was there in his 2011 he was coming back from?

Alex Rios is a much better choice. From Dunn-like depths of 2011 to legitimately excellent this year.

I think Jeter will finish higher than Cano in the overall MVP voting, even though Cano has been three times as valuable. No knock on Jeter, but still.

I remembered him hitting much worse than he apparently did. Alex Rios would be a much better choice.

Does anyone think Wade Miley has a shot at NL ROY ? Or are they going to hand it to Harper by default ?

I read at least one other national baseball writer who, while voting for Harper, thought that Miley would win. So apparently there's some sentiment out there in favor of awarding it to him.

Would be a mistake, though.

Eh. I think it's hard to say with much confidence that Harper has been better than Miley this year. I'd be surprised if Miley won though.

I don't have a problem giving a boost to the guy that you expect to remain a star.

I also don't have a problem with giving a boost to the 19 year old over the 25 year old, but in terms of pure value they've been close.

Hey, look!
The Blue Jays had two winners!
