ESPN:Vin Scully to miss home opener

Vin Scully, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Hall of Fame broadcaster, will miss calling the team’s home opener on Tuesday for just the second time in his 63 years at the microphone. Scully, who the team said was suffering from a severe cold, skipped the game on orders from his doctor, a source said. The illness isn’t thought to be serious…..The only other time Scully missed a Dodgers home opener was in 1977, when he was calling the first round of the Masters golf tournament for network television.

ahhh—rub some dirt on it, you wimp…

I switched to the Rays-Tigers game when I found out. Vin missing Opening Day was big damn news on the radio, where they're doing a 3-hour lead-in to the game.

The 1977 Dodgers won their home opener and went to the World Series. Maybe this will end Vin's curse.

I put this game on MLB.TV, which I got for the first time this season, and this was the first time this year I had watched the Dodgers. I was all excited for Vin and then... Steiner and Lyons. Ouch.

And now the Dodgers have won their 2012 home opener. I can only hope that, like in 1977, this leads to a Yankees World Series victory.

When you're 84 a "severe cold" should always be considered "serious."

Steiner is good.

But Scully couldn't save a booth that included Lyons.

Shut your whore mouth. Vin's fine! He's just fine! YOU SHUT UP!

The Pirates team ERA jumped to 1.50 in today's loss.

The Man: I'm not badmouthing The Other Man. Just relating that, if he were not immortal (i.e., possessing of infinity hit points and a +10 magical cloak minimum...minimum!), a bad cold might be worrisome.

Nobody thought you were. It's just that nobody wants to contemplate Vin's mortality. I sure as hell don't.

I for one have enjoyed the first half of Vin Scully's career.

The first half of his career isn't over yet.

Consider my whore mouth shut.

I recall a thread here when Scully fell and hurt himself or something like that, and the Primey was something like, "Doesn't he know he isn't supposed to die."

Who's a more beloved baseball figure than Scully (at least on this site)?

I had the pleasure of meeting Vin Scully a couple of times. I even got to touch him.

Who was that guy who said Scully was overrated? This is his fault. I think a lynching is in order.

At age 84, "serious cold" usually transforms into "pneumonia", which usually turns into "hospitalization".

Here's hoping he bucks the trend.

The other time he missed a home opener, Ben Petrick was born. It was also the day of the Mariners' and Blue Jays' first games.

God pneumonia is awful, let's hope not.
