Ex-Phillies star Howard joins ESPN’s ‘Baseball Tonight’ crew

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — Former Philadelphia Phillies slugger Ryan Howard has joined ESPN as an analyst on “Baseball Tonight.”

The network said Thursday that Howard will start in early March. He also will appear on other television and radio formats at ESPN.

Well, this confirms just how much ESPN holds the sport of baseball in contempt.

You beat me to it. Obviously Howard was gifted with one the worst contracts ever, and got way more MVP love than he ever warranted. But I've never heard a bad word about the guy.

I feel very strongly that I would be so much better at being a retired 39 year old rich person than these guys are. Spending a few late-ish hours every night in Bristol ####### Connecticut is not the way to do it!

From what little I've seen of Howard on MLB Network, he has promise as a broadcaster.

This is a bit of a surprise. I never got much of a feel for Howard's personality. Didn't see Howard much in the media as a Phillie. Maybe it's because I wasn't in the Philly area. Utley and Rollins and Hamels were more the public faces of the team.

Similar to #4, I think he comes across well when I've seen him on TV in the past.

#5, I wasn't in Philly but I remember seeing him in a lot of Subway commercials. Always seemed like a friendly, charismatic guy.

He did an episode of The Office as well, where he came off as someone who was comfortable on camera. I think he could do well in this role.

He was on Always Sunny in Philadelphia with Utley, also. They both did pretty good....

I was gonna say that how could anyone not come across as a friendly, charismatic guy in a Subway commercial, but then...Mike Trout.

Howard just oozes charisma/charm/personality, I thought that was pretty much widely accepted. He would be great for this type of job, he may not be a saber favorite with some of the things he is going to say, but he's going to be a viewer favorite with the way he carries himself.

And I think that post 3 hit on a point... These guys did make a lot of money, and find out that the retired life is just boring, and that they really don't have many other skills or passions beyond the diamond. So they take up these types of jobs. It's not the illegals that is taking our jobs, it's rich men with nothing better to do... :)

That's my recollection, too. Howard spent a week as a guest talking head, and did quite well, IMHO. I suspect that's what got him the ESPN gig.

ryan howard is extremely charasmatic and has done more than well the few times i have seen him on camera

Yeah, Howard is good at being a nice guy on camera (and probably off). He may occasionally say stuff non-SABR. But, a few interviews I read of the guy late in his career he actually talked about needing to change his launch angle and stuff to compensate for his one leg basically being bad (without saying that exactly because then pitchers would pick on it even more). I thought his contract was a terrible Amaro joke too but its not on Howard that it was offered, right?
