Ex-baseball player wins first Canadian cellphone throwing contest

What Makes Sammy Throw?

Jeremiah Sammy, 25, of Brampton, Ont., was crowned the winner Saturday after he chucked an old cellphone 78.88 metres across the football field at the University of Toronto’s Varsity Centre.

The competition, sponsored by cellphone provider Mobilicity, also rewarded Sammy and two runner-ups with Samsung Galaxy S III smartphones equipped with a year of unlimited phone services.

...Sammy said he had been practicing his throw with an old smartphone since hearing about the contest online.

The trick in getting the long distance, he said, is to make sure the cellphone is thrust high into the air and spins before landing.

“You just want to get it as high in the sky as you can so it starts spinning and goes,” he said.

The ex-pitcher said he plans on giving his brother $1,000 of the prize money as a wedding gift while using the rest of the cash to make a “money bed” that he could roll around in.

I once bet a guy I could throw an empty vodka bottle 100 yards. (how the bottle became empty may have had something to do with me making this bet).

Luckily I managed to back-track and confuse the fellow with legalize enough for him to not take the bet.

My college roommate once bet us that he could throw an orange from our dorm's courtyard, over a fence, over the road on the other side of the fence, over the field next to the road, and into the Charles River. We went outside, he threw it, and it didn't even clear the road, landing and exploding on the hood of a moving car.

In his defense, it was still a pretty far throw (my roommate was a serious two-sport college athlete.) In our defense, we at least thought he would clear the road.

Alcohol may have been involved in that bet as well.

At first Greg, I thought up meant that you got him stoned, which struck me as an overly elaborate way of getting out of the deal.

As for Sammy, I remember that dude - he started off as an infielder.

I blew out my elbow trying to throw an apple over a dorm at Pomona College. The funny thing is that I've never heard of this alcohol of which you guys speak.

The cellphone throwers had hoped to beat the Guinness World record of 101.46 metres, set in August by Ere Karjalainen of Finland.

Maybe Jeremiah should have gotten drunk the day before trying to break Ere's record?
