Ex-Giant Aaron Rowand on ‘American Chopper’

Prolly there to have his broken V-Nose enclosed motorcycle trailer fixed…

Former Giants outfielder Aaron Rowand, released late last season in a cost-cutting move, is getting a custom motorcycle to go with a spot on a reality show.

...Rowand described the opportunity as “unbelievable.”

Well good luck to him. I love the idea of getting a custom bike built as much as the next motorcycle nut, but the stuff they do on that show reminded me of "Ace Of Cakes" more than anything else before I stopped watching.

Shouldn't it be Ace of Cakes is derivative of American Chopper? Since without shows like American Chopper Ace of Cakes would never have gotten greenlit.

Of course, I agree - but I was referring to the bike becoming merely a platform for shiny bits to be perched on rather than the end in itself.

I hope he doesn't crash the custom bike into a wall. :)

Chopper to short...double play.

"Unbelievable."

I really thought American Chopper was a cooking show.

I don't think it was a "cost-cutting" move. They still have to pay him.

"American Slicer" stars Dr. Frank Jobe.

Emotional costs are real, too.

I wonder, can the Giants get out of paying him if he wrecks on his new chopper? Technically, he'd have violated his contract.

I'm sure they would be just as excited if he fell down washing his truck.

I don't think they've ever once even farted about how something will effect the bike, rather than how it will look.

#4 was pretty underrated and deserves some praise.

I’ve complained long and hard about the redneckification of the Discovery Channel. It’s supposed to be about popular science, technology, and history. Now its dominated by American Chopper, American Guns, Sons of Guns, Moonshiners and a boatload of shows in Alaska. Ugh

Pretty much all the cool under-rated channels of the 90's have turned into stupid reality TV channels. History Channel, Discovery Channel, Food Network, A&E. . .

What is wrong with me as an American male that motorcycles do absolutely nothing for me? I don't disdain the predilection many have for them, but even if I was fabulously wealthy, I wouldn't purchase one, if I was given one - I'd sell it. I just have zero/approaching negative desire for one... and my dad owns a pretty nice Harley that I've ridden. It just does nothing for me.

Am I missing a chromosome or something?

I wanted to get a bike when I was in my early 20's. Then I became an ICU nurse. Then I wanted something with lots of airbags.

I've been in a couple of bad wrecks. It hurts when you fall. But given that abstaining from risk is no guarantor of additional time on this mortal coil, and even if it were, the ultimate result is the same, engaging in certain risky behaviors is something I find personally acceptable, and the payoff is immediate and intense. I never got the chance to step in against a 100mph fastball - but I've done 120 across Death Valley with no helmet on. It's a pretty great feeling.

Yep, those pesky advertisers want their wares seen by a large number of viewers...niche channels can't deliver those large numbers. And that really, really, really stinks. My wife and I very much used to enjoy sitting down and watching a documentary, or an actual "here's how this works" show, or perhaps a bit of a fun reality show that tried to explain the science that was being used. Now, if we're lucky,we might see folks like Adam and Jamie throw one equation up on the screen for an entire season.

I appreciate that it costs a lot of money to do these shows, and that advertisers now have an almost uncountable number of channels on which to spend money, AND that the sheer volume of channels leads to huge volumes of uncreative junk, but the lack of any single cable channel that consistently has SOMETHING on that is worth watching remains sad.

These days, IF we're still awake after the kids are asleep, we just watch movies...but even THAT was foiled of late, with AMC starting to do more crapola programming and TCM going "beach" on us. Most recently we've resorted to watching episodes of "Phineas and Ferb" that the kids have recorded.... Well, that or our local PBS affiliate, assuming there isn't a storm to interfere with the pick-up.

And I'll pass on anything related to donorcycles...first time we visited an emergency room they brought in the (technically) "survivors" of several motorcycle accidents. That was enough for me. Ditto for quad bikes and other non-roll-caged ATVs.

That's "Chopped".

What does "going beach" mean? TCM seems to me to be just like it's always been.

Ancient astronaut theorists or doomsday preppers, who is more scary and delusional?
