Ex-Red Sox 2B Barrios among 40 indicted in Puerto Rico

Federal officials say a former Major League baseball player and 39 other people have been indicted on federal drug trafficking charges.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office issued a statement on Tuesday saying that Angel Santos Berrios was second in command of a drug ring that sold crack, heroin, cocaine and prescription pills in the southern mountain town of Cayey.

It says the group had operated since 2000 and would use taxicabs to deliver the drugs.

The 33-year-old Barrios is in custody and it is unclear if he has an attorney. He played second base for the Boston Red Sox in 2001 and with the Cleveland Indians in 2003, batting .207 overall in 41 games for the two teams.

According to B-R, his name is Angel Ramon Santos. Was he one of the guys who was caught under a false name when he was playing in MLB?

Blows my mind that I don't remember anything about him at all. I generally have some knowledge of any player a team can bring off their bench or out of their bullpen, from about 1982 to the present. But if I ever saw him play, I've forgotten completely. The name game doesn't help but I don't remember Angel Santos either.

Santos was on the '03 Indians team that lost every MLB-ready middle infielder in the organization to injury and ended up rolling 22-year-old Brandon Phillips and 21-year-old Jhonny Peralta out there for a combined 663 PA of ~54 OPS+ suckitude.

The middle infield was supposed to be Ricky Gutierrez/Vizquel, but Gutierrez hurt his back and Vizquel hadn't recovered from knee surgery. Bill Selby wasn't much of a second baseman and hit .103, Zach Sorensen was an awful hitter who was never going to keep an MLB job, and John McDonald hit .215/258/.280. Eventually they turned to Santos, mostly because he had a pulse and wasn't Selby, Sorensen, McDonald, Phillips, or Peralta.

I remember thinking he had a bit of pop, an interesting beard, and looked like he knew what he was doing in the field, though he never did get back to the majors. I guess a .245 career OBP will do that to a guy.

I've bought drugs in "La Perla", it was quick and easy. Much nicer than some urban US open air drug markets. Of course, I didn't stick around until after dark.
