Fan IQ: Weird MLB Promos Never Cease To Amaze

With the baseball season having just officially gotten underway, now’s the time when you start getting hit with ridiculous local promo commercials looking to get you to come out for a game.  And let’s face it, some teams need all the help they can get drawing fans. My Giants are running a stupid “Are you a gamer?” commercial campaign. If by “gamer” you mean I love watching my team lose, then hell yeah, I’m aboard.

But because baseball is the one sport that truly goes the extra mile to make weird promos, here’s a look back at some ridiculous ones used over the years to try and get you fired up for the season. Because if a 6’5” man beating his kids with a pillow won’t get you out to the ballpark, nothing will.

The look on Torii Hunter's face when he enters the party is PRICELESS

"It's for the Pittsburgh Pirates and involves gratuitous butt slaps and the line 'We're all Pirates.'"

I had never seen that one until today. Thank God.

That Pirates one is one that's used by the Fox Sports networks for several teams. They just use effects to change the jersey.

The Rockies one is kinda awesome.

I think the Twins have had pretty good ads for the last couple years. I really like this one, and this one

These are really lame when you're in a two-team market. Our local FSN station would run this ad with the actors wearing Giants jerseys and ten minutes later run the same ad with the actors wearing A's jerseys.

Remember the old FSN promo (used by lots of the FSN nets) with the old man watching TV while his wife vacuums around him while "her" voice says something to the effect of "He's in there all year long... yelling at the players like he could do it better, and he's never been on skates in his life. Pshaw. Fool."

Love it. Got it saved on DVD. Somewhere.

If it weren't for such ad campaigns, I wouldn't know how to dance "The El Duque" today.

Funny how football doesn't seem to need this kind of stuff to attract the "casual fan." With football, team identification and the game itself seem to do the trick.

Not counting last year's "positive profile" NFL series of ad spots (aka "we're not ALL murderers, rapists and dog torturers!").

Not to mention lots of, y'know, bookmaking action.

Its easier to try to get fans to come out to eight games than it is to come out for 81.
