FanGraphs: Carruth: Fastball Losses

As Mrs. Delaviour (French for dicknose) said to me in high school…“You’re the most negative person I’ve ever met.” So…to answer that here’s the Fastball Gains.

Looking at the list from the other end, however – that is, from the pitchers that lost the most speed on average on their fastballs – produces more starters. Whether because starters will get more innings even when injured, a usual byproduct of diminished fastball speed, or some other cause is open for speculation, but the results are definitely interesting.

As promised, a list of the biggest drops in fastball speed from 2009 to 2008. A minimum of 50 innings pitched in each season was needed to qualify.

After the 2009 season Manny Delcarmen admitted to having hid an injury.

Anyone want to dig up reports on the others?

EDITed to translate into English.

Just eyeballing the list, Joba and Ohlendorf went from being at least partially relievers to almost exclusively starters.

Repoz, a teacher uttered the exact same words to me in high school. He was the cheerleading and student council advisor, actually, but that year they'd made him the journalism teacher, in charge of the school newspaper. Google "Prop 13."

I took her astute appraisal the only way I could...then I buried her in a shallow grave covered it with leaves that was soon found by a man walking his dog or a boy scout searching for arrowheads.

At this rate, in another 40 years, Joba's fastball will slowly drift towards second base.

Not so: they'll put him on a 15 IP limit to slow the decline.

Coming from that bozo, I took it as a compliment.

I'll bet some of these guys started throwing different fastball types like more 2 seamers and losing some MPH.

I'd like to see what Santana's fastball was clocked at from May, when he came back from his injury and pitched like crap, and in August and September, when he was health and sporting a 3.18 ERA.

Frayed ligament of Santana's healed great.
