Fanhouse: Lackey: I Want to Watch Baseball, Not a Three-Hour Taco Bell Commercial

“Nearly 150 million people see a Taco Bell® commercial once a week – more than half of the U.S. population.”....So, thank you Jub Jub Buck and FOX!

I’ve always secretly suspected that Fox has been slowly trying to destroy baseball telecasts since they took over the playoff broadcasts a few years ago. Their lead broadcast team of Joe Buck and Tim McCarver is full of trite cliches and hollow statements that never offer any actual insight. Their radar gun bursts into flames. The in-game graphics beep and sing like crazy for no particularly reason. Sometimes there are robots. And yet, I put up with all of it. Until now.

Starting with last night’s “unscripted” conversation between Royce Clayton and Coco Crisp about the free taco giveaway (you can call it unscripted all you want, but why else would ROYCE CLAYTON be mic’d up?) I think Buck and McCarver have talked more about the free tacos than baseball. They replayed the conversation tonight, they celebrated in the booth when Jacoby Ellsbury stole a base, they played ANOTHER conversation between Clayton and Ellsbury with Clayton urging Ellsbury to steal a base for America, and they interviewed Taco Bell’s creepy COO. His empty eyes bored a hole into the camera and my Fox-addled soul. Not only that, Jub-Jub asked the Stepford-COO about giving away “Millions of dollars of free tacos.” Try tens of thousands of dollars of free tacos, maybe.

Harvey, I know what your saying. Barry Zito, for example, at his best, would harldy throw his curve if he felt he command on his fastball. And yeah, a first pitch change up is kind of a goofy concept. A guy like Jimenez can dominate with the fastball and I don't know why they didn't let him establish it. If he doesn't have command with the fastball, I'm not sure the slider and curve and changeup are going to save him anyway, not at this stage of his career. To quote Major League: Give 'em the heater. Also, who calls pitches for the Rox? Torrealba or the bench?

It was fun to watch Schilling pitch last night. His curve was all over the place so he went mostly fastball on the corners and the splitter as his out pitch. Say what you want about the man, but he knows how to pitch.

Best Taco Bell promo regarding baseball was in 1988 when they were the corporate sponsor for the a Soviet baseball team which played US College teams. Taco Bell provided the uniforms for the Soviet team and it had the slogan, "Make a Run For the Border" on the back of each jersey.

Back in the (not so long ago) day, the Warriors used to do "Score 100 points and get a free chalupa." This was during like 2000-2002, when the Warriors were historically crappy enough on defense but good enough on offense that they were losing 120-100 games regularly. I won many a free chalupa during those years. And, as a 13 and 14 year old with a Taco Bell in town that stayed open late enough for me and my dad to drive through as we got back from Oakland, it really was pretty awesome.

Ahh the good old days when every town only had one McDonald's instead of 50.

My town still only has one McDonald's. It's the Starbucks we have to worry about (there's 5 of em now. In a town of 28k)0

The Blazers still give away free chalupas for 100 points.

"They're not booing, they're saying 'cha-LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-pa'"

I'm pretty sure it did used to be 120 and used to be Pizza Hut. That was years ago, though.

Probably was a lot higher bar during the Jordan years. No team scores that high regularly. But I don't remember that well (and I've gone to a lot more games since then).

I haven't been to a game since the Jordan years, pre-championship, so I'm probably remembering the Pizza Hut deal.

Anyway, I still think that the stolen base thing is edging too much into the arena of affecting the play in a meaningful way.
