Fanhouse: Mariners’ Offer Not Enough to Entice Washburn Back

It’s a Fanhouse! A Fanhouse!

The pitching-strapped Seattle Mariners have made an offer to left-handed pitcher Jarrod Washburn, MLB sources told FanHouse Wednesday.

However, the club’s financial limitations kept the offer small, and Washburn hasn’t accepted.

Indications are that the offer was less than the $1.5 million base salary with $7 million in incentives that was given to another left-handed starter, Erik Bedard, who will begin the 2010 season on the disabled list.

A third lefty, 2008 Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee, also is going to be on the disabled list for a minimum of two or three weeks to start the season, heightening Seattle’s need for veteran pitching. Beyond ace Felix Hernandez, the Mariners’ other four starters in Lee’s absence—Ian Snell, Ryan Rowland-Smith, Doug Fister and Jason Vargas—have a combined big-league record of 61-73.

...After a several-week cessation of talks between the two sides, sources say GM Jack Zduriencik and agent Scott Boras have chatted recently, at which time the most recent offer came down. Indications are the Mariners don’t feel they have the money to go higher than their Bedard offer with Washburn.

It must be mildly annoying when you have a perfectly timed fluke year, and can't parlay it into a good contract.

I wonder if they are considering Pedro as an option.

You'd think the Mets, with Ollie Perez getting worse as ST goes on, would be interested, but Noooooooo!

Actually, wouldn't both Washburn and Pedro make the Mets' rotation quite a bit better right now?

I'd give it a shot. I'd like to see Maine in long relief before betting on him again as a starter, and if Pedro has problems in the rotation the Mets have four guys who are capable fifth starters, so it's not like there aren't fall back positions.

There's no way the Mets are going to make the playoffs without making some move to bolster the starting rotation during the season.

I know some people think that all the words after playoffs are unnecessary.

Peter Gammons said that Washburn could command a 3 year/$36 million contract this off season and was serious about it.

Gammons has never quite recovered from his brain surgery.

Washburn's "performance" in Detroit killed any chance he had of turning a good fluke half year into a big payday. If he signed today, he probably isn't going to be ready for a few weeks anyway.

Lee might not be out that long; he had a good session today

Here are Washburn's Detroit stats, because I feel like being miserable for a moment:

43 ip, 51 hits, 16 bb, 21 k, 12 hr, ERA+ 63

I've said it before but I really think that if the Tigers didn't add Washburn and Aubrey Huff mid-season they probably win another game and make the playoffs.

If only his bad stats from the last half of the year were mixed in with his good stats, instead of being clearly separated on the "DET" line of his stats.

The Mets certainly have a shot with their current lineup, it's just that it's a longer shot than I'm comfortable with. Given their wealth of fifth starters (which helps keep them from getting blown out) the Mets might do just as well by adding offense as by adding pitching, and try winning games 6-5 instead of 5-4.

Why does every thread become a Mets thread? I'm not anti-Mets, it just gets a little old hearing about them.

Ummm.... because they're endless fascinating, like watching a train go off a bridge? Actually, I couldn't figure out your point until I scrolled up and remembered that this is a Washburn/Mariners thread.

Wait a minute. With a handle like that you're not a fan?
   17. Tuque Posted: April 01, 2010 at 04:58 AM (#3490235)
I like the Mets. They're my local team, since I currently live in New York and hate the Yankees. I have a Mets hat. But they're my second-favorite NL team, after the Dodgers. Hence the handle. "The Duke of Flatbush" becomes "the Tuque of Flatbush" because I was trying to think up a pun and the word "tuque" is funny.

I probably should have gone with a Koufax reference, though, or Scully. I'm relatively ambivalent towards Snider, but Koufax and Scully are my two favorite parts of the Dodgers canon.

That works, though I admit to being seriously puzzled by a handle that translates approximately as The "knitted cap, originally of wool though now often of synthetic fibers, that is designed to provide warmth in winter. Most tuques are tapered, they sometimes have ear-flaps, and may be topped with a pom-pom, this style of tuque is sometimes referred to as a sherpa," of Flatbush.

Was that a Wash burn?
