Fanhouse: The Denny McLain Quartet, With Special Guest Bob Gibson on Guitar (Video)

Sweet Augie Meyers Lanskys! This almost trumps the Velvet Underground on The Lawrence Welk Show!!

I always knew Denny McLain was big in 1968, but I guess I didn’t know how big. As if winning 31 games, leading the Tigers to a World Series title and earning every first-place vote for the American League MVP and Cy Young awards wasn’t enough, he also appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show performing “The Girl from Ipanema” on the organ.

Oh, and did I mention that he was joined by Bob Gibson, the reigning MVP and Cy Young from the National League, in his encore?

Gibson knocked Ed down when he got too close to the stage, and McLain stole his wallet.

If you listen closely, you can hear Mickey Stanley on bassoon, which he had never played before.

nicely done--suitably obscure

Well, they had to find some way to work Al Kaline back in on trombone.

Is that a real sky in the background?

What's also uncanny is how much Ed Sullivan reminds me of Richard Nixon at that stage of his career.

loved that suit bob was wearing. from what i've seen, he could probably still fit into it now.

OTOH Denny might have to let it out a notch.

To me, seeing this makes 'The Girl from Ipanema' a sadder song than 'Yesterday when I was Young' because I really feel McLain's life has been a sadder one than Mickey Mantle's (see Mantle thread above). (I wonder if Denny was packing a gun on this night!?)

Was Gibson's amp on?

There hasn't been a star pitcher known for his organ work since David Cone...

He's credited in the video as "Denny McClain". Did you know there's a federal law that requires names that start with "Mc" to be misspelled by tossing in an extra letter? Did you? DID YOU...?!

Not that I'm bitter.

I beg to differ.
