Feinsand: Andy Pettitte done for year, may have thrown last pitch in pinstripes

Accountability has never been Andy Pettitte’s problem, that’s for sure.

The veteran pitcher put the weight of the Yankees’ failed season on his achy left shoulder Wednesday, saying his dismal performance down the stretch was the primary reason the Bombers are headed home following Sunday’s finale in Boston.

“The biggest thing was me, personally; I just pitched terrible,” Pettitte said. “I don’t think we played great, I don’t think we hit in some clutch situations when we needed to, but everybody pitched really well other than me down the stretch. If I don’t win one game out of my last 10 starts, I think the last couple days of the season, we’d be right there.”

...Having battled a sore left shoulder for much of the past two months, Pettitte won’t make his final start on Saturday at Fenway Park, as Joe Girardi announced Wednesday that Sidney Ponson would take the ball in his place.

“(The shoulder) has given me a little trouble,” Pettitte said. “I just wanted to go out and pitch, to do what it takes to get out there and pitch. Now that it’s over, now that we’re not going to the playoffs, there’s no sense in trying to do what it takes to go out there.”

Hey, if it ain’t a “big game in a big spot”...why bother playing.

Amazing this could be written after Pettitte told lie upon lie about taking HGH in a statement in which he professed to be telling the truth:

"People that know me will know that what I say is true,” he said.

I guess the writers like Pettitte's face, or something. Here's a man who (a) took HGH (or claims he did), and (b) is widely rumored to have signed with Houston because his wife demanded it due to marital infidelity. (b) might well not be true, and even if it is, it's his business. (a) isn't immoral, and shouldn't be illegal. But the fact is, those things are out there, yet to the media, Pettitte is still this upstanding, heroic, steadfast guy. I don't want to think it's because of the color of his skin, or his religion, or the region of the country he comes from, but there's little excuse these days to think it isn't some combination of those things.

I think the biggest thing Pettitte has going for him in regards to writer's attidues is that he's not Roger Clemens

but .. but .. but .. he said sorry.

His "accountability": I took HGH but I'm not a cheater. You may call me one, but god and I know I'm not.

#4 is sarcastic obviously, but it should be pointed out that even his apology wasn't sincere. As #5 points out, he said, 'Yeah, I did it, but it was just one time and it was just to recover from an injury, so I'm not a cheater.
