Fernando Rodney agrees to sign with Mariners

Rodney can’t get no respect!

The Seattle Mariners have agreed to sign free agent closer Fernando Rodney to a two-year, $14 million deal, Jon Heyman has confirmed. The was first reported by Jonah Keri of Grantland.

Rodney, 36, was unbelievable for the Rays in 2012 when he closed 48 games in 50 chances with a 0.60 ERA (641 OPS+!). He took a step backward last season, though, when he went 37 for 45 in save chances with a 3.38 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 82 strikeouts in 66 2/3 innings. He was excellent in September, though, with a 0.82 ERA and 0.82 WHIP.

The Rays paid Rodney $4.25 million for 141.1 innings of a 201 ERA+. The Mariners will pay him $14 million for something probably nowhere near as good. Good luck to you, your crooked hat, and your weird arrow celebration Fernando.

It's pretty interesting that Jonah Keri is crediting for being first with the news of the signing. Maybe Jack Z has developed an interest in the extra two percent?

If you compare the contract with what the Rays paid, it's a terrible contract. If you compare it to what the Dodgers are going to pay Brian Wilson (10M in 2014, team option for approx 9M in 2015), this doesn't look so bad.

Not good, but not so bad.

It's Fernando Rodney, and they're relying on him to be an effective, reliable closer, so it's bad.

And Nelson Cruz could possibly be their next sign.

Jack Z is apparently taking the "I'm going to take a huge dump on the boss's desk" route of getting fired.

I didn't think this was a bad deal, then I realized...

Pretty sure he can't fit a Molina in his luggage.

He'll probably be just fine, but they still have giant holes in the rotation where Erasmo and Paxton are being penciled in. I'm not hearing anything about their signing Capuano, Ubaldo or anyone to fill those holes.

Luggage Salesman: Have you thought much about luggage, Mr. Banks?

Joe Banks: No.

Luggage Salesman: It's the central preoccupation of my life.

Joe Banks: And then I'll be staying on a tiny island and I don't know if I'll be living in a hut, or what.

Luggage Salesman: Very exciting... as a luggage problem!

Luggage Salesman: This is our premier steamer trunk, it's all handmade, only the finest materials. It's even watertight, tight as a drum. If I had the need, and the wherewithal, Mr. Banks, this would be my trunk of choice.

Joe Banks: I'll take four of them.

Luggage Salesman: May you live to be a thousand years old, sir.

Joe Banks: I tell you one thing, though. Wherever we go, whatever we do, we're gonna take this luggage with us!

Any movie with Meg Ryan playing multiple parts and Tom Hanks is good enough for me.

Rodney walked 36 in 66.2 innings last year, to crap all over the Molina's-framing-made-him theory.

Which is not bad for Rodney, it's identical to his pre-Molina rate.

But his K rate last year was his highest ever and his K/BB rate was his 2nd highest of last 6 years, second only to his first Molina year. The 4 years pre-Molina Rodney averaged a 1.41 K/BB rate, last year well into his decline years at age 36 he struck out 2.28 for every walk.

Molina is a f***ng master.

Molina put down two fingers and my goiter spontaneously healed.
