Fever Pitch: Trade Talks for Halladay Heating Up

The chance for Jays fans to complain about what they get for Halladay could come this week.

The Phillies’ pursuit of Toronto ace Roy Halladay appears to be reaching a boil.

Two baseball sources told CSNPhilly.com Monday that the team is actively talking about a contract extension with representatives for the 32-year-old righthander. It is likely that the Phillies would want to sign Halladay to an extension before they traded for him. Without an extension, Halladay would be eligible for free agency after the 2010 season.

One of the sources said that Halladay is likely to have a physical exam with Phillies’ medical personal this week.

EDIT: Rosenthal says a little more.

A three-team blockbuster that would send Halladay to the Phillies and Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee to another club is under discussion, sources say.

A straight trade between the Phillies and Jays also is possible. Either way, there are strong indications that the Halladay talks are approaching a critical juncture.

Rosenthal floated the Lee-Halladay extravaganza as "just a thought," right? My conspiracy-o-meter tells me that he got tipped off to its possibility, floated it as his own idea, and is going to take genius credit on the 25% chance that it actually happens.

Out of curiousity, how does this work without violating tampering rules? Do both teams have to notify the commissioner's office about what's going on?

Could it be possible the Phillies read it and thought that it may actually be a pretty good idea?

I believe the rules are that the Jays can grant a limited window of negotiation - either 48 or 72 hours - and that the Commissioner's office does need to be notified. There were similar windows of negotiation granted when the Red Sox were trying to trade for A-Rod and when the Mets traded for Santana.

So I guess the net positive for the Phillies in a trade that subtracts Lee but adds Halladay is the ability to sign Halladay to a long-term contract (since I believe Lee has stated he's going to test free agency), but.. it doesn't make a whole ton of sense to me to deal Lee + prospects for Halladay.

But wouldn't it be Lee + prospects for two draft picks if they didn't make this deal & then lost Lee?

Cue Mike Piazza posts.

I still don't get why Philly would deal Lee. They have a pretty deep system. Flags fly forever. You have Lee for one more year. Make a big run for 2010 and part with some of those good prosepcts.
   13. AROM Posted: December 14, 2009 at 10:10 PM (#3412255)
This is one crappy day on all fronts. What in the world do the Mariners have to offer for Cliff Lee?

Dustin Ackley can't be traded until a year after he's signed. I can see Brandon Morrow being a piece of a trade, maybe Michael Saunders, but this isn't exactly a deep organization in prospects. Is Franklin Gutierrez headed to Toronto or something?

F baseball.

PleaseletitbeIchiropleaseletitbeIchiro... okay, that'll never happen, but it's fun to dream.

Honestly, I don't know, and I follow M's blogs more than I follow Jays blogs. Morrow maybe? Phillippe Aumont might make sense, I guess?

   20. jscmeagol Posted: December 14, 2009 at 10:16 PM (#3412282)
The problem with Blanton that I see is that why would he return anything that the Jays would want?

I can't imagine the Phillies would prefer any of that to pairing Lee and Halladay at the top of the rotation, and the Phillies have enough good prospects to get Halladay by themselves. I mean, if the Jays can't do the deal unless an Aardsma-equivalent comes along, then trade them Madsen and sign Mike Gonzalez.

Lopez? I guess you're joking on Cameron, but he isn't of any use to a team that has Utley and Howard.

Blanton to the Mariners might make some sense, decent no longer needed, frees up $ for the Halladay extension, his value might match with a couple so-so prospects.

A pretty big difference from trading Cliff Lee.

The Phillies are in agreement on a three-team trade with the Mariners and Blue Jays to acquire star pitcher Roy Halladay, SI.com has learned.

Sources say Halladay will agree to a contract extension to complete the deal. It's expected to be a formality.

2006 is worse for me:

Sign/acquire Frank Thomas, Gregg Zaun, Royce Clayton, Matt Stairs, John Thomson, Sal Fassano, Rey Olmedo, Jason Smith, Jesse Carlson, Tomo Ohka, Victor Zambrano

Lose: Frank Catalanotto, Justin Speier, Ted Lilly.

Extend Vernon Wells' contract.

I still remember trying to defend the Ohka/Zambrano/Thomson 5th starter plan. And the Thomas/Wells money was incredibly damaging to the franchise. Losing Halladay was probably inevitable at some point. Wasting millions of dollars on Wells wasn't.

Edit: I forgot about Gonzalez. That might push things over the top (as, obviously, the returns on Halladay might). But don't worry, Anthroupolos has a ton of cloak-and-dagger type deals going on. He's like a ninja GM, like a thief in the night, stealing... John Buck and Joey Gathright from the clutches of teams like the Pirates.

Certainly have to think it'd take more than Aumont to get Cliff Lee. Whether those extra parts would stay in Philly or come to Toronto, who knows. Brown is great as the centerpiece of the deal, though, if that rumour is true.

What is Bowden's source other than he has the phone numbers of every GM in baseball?

If Aumont is going to Toronto does that mean that Lee to Seattle is more likely to happen? Would the Mariners give up Aumont for Blanton (I thought Aumont was a pretty big deal, though I haven't heard for a while)

According to what I can gather, here's what's going to the Jays (crossposted from the other thread):

Tyson Gillies (SEA)
Philippe Aumont (SEA)
Juan Ramirez (SEA)
M. Taylor (PHI)
Dominic Brown (PHI)

As I said in the other thread, if this is true then hey, that's a damn fine haul for Halladay. The Phils gave up the most, actually.
   63. zempf Posted: December 14, 2009 at 11:14 PM (#3412430)
I've seen rumors that it's one of Brown OR Taylor, I don't think the Phillies would give up both.
   64. Gaelan Posted: December 14, 2009 at 11:15 PM (#3412432)
I was going to post to Ryan that he should join me on the having given up on the Jays side of the fence. However if Esoteric is right then I'm back on board.

[Edit] If it's only one of Brown or Taylor I'm not so happy especially if it's Brown. Taylor has to be the centrepiece.
   65. ColonelTom Posted: December 14, 2009 at 11:32 PM (#3412461)
Phils would give up Taylor before Brown if given the choice - Brown supposedly has more upside and should be ready right when they will need a replacement for Ibanez (assuming they manage to keep Victorino and Werth). Taylor is ready but blocked in Philly.
   66. RJ in TO Posted: December 14, 2009 at 11:33 PM (#3412465)
If Esoteric's list is correct, I can live with this trade.
   67. jscmeagol Posted: December 15, 2009 at 12:09 AM (#3412521)
Isn't Werth a FA after this year? Would they resign him to a big deal with one of Brown or Taylor around? They might, but I thought the idea was that one of those guys takes over from Werth in 2011 since Werth could want (and get) something similar to Bay.
   68. ColonelTom Posted: December 15, 2009 at 12:18 AM (#3412530)
They'll try to extend Werth, but it's going to take a lot of money to do it. He doesn't have as long a track record of success as Bay, and his bat is a notch below Bay's, though the huge gap in defense probably makes up for it (unless Bay signs as a DH somewhere). He won't get Bay money, but he'll be north of $10M per season to be sure.
   69. Kirby Kyle Posted: December 15, 2009 at 01:36 AM (#3412593)
Stark reports that Travis D'Arnaud and Taylor will be the two players given up by Philly.
