First-Round Pick Gerrit Cole Opts for College Over Yankees

When the Yankees drafted pitcher Gerrit Cole in the first round of the June draft, they believed that Cole would sign with them and forego a college scholarship. It turns out that Cole has changed his mind and will go to U.C.L.A. instead.

According to a person involved in the negotiations, the Yankees have learned that Cole intends to go to college, no matter what they offer. The person was granted anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly before Friday’s deadline for teams to sign drafted players.

Bad news for the Yankees if true.  At least they get another 1st round pick next year, but I wouldn’t count on another prospect as good as Cole being there.

Of course if he did sign he would end up needing TJ surgery within a couple months.

What do you think am I missing that makes fourth so unlikely?

A quarterback?

A quarterback?

Oh, I didn't see he was hurt. Haven't paid much attention yet. Ok, that makes way more sense.

I can't believe it took this long to get a UCLA football fan to respond to this. @ Oregon, Cal and ASU, and I don't think they're ready to beat USC. Second if they're incredibly lucky, probably 4th. What do you think am I missing that makes fourth so unlikely?

Well, you just named four teams that are better than us, we've lost most of our good defensive players, we have no experience on the offensive line, we're already down to the third-string QB, and we have almost no speed at the wide receiver position; this team will be worse than last year's and last year's was pretty bad. A .500 season would be a miracle.

Yeah, and Love, M'bah Moute and Westbrook all left.

I was there 20 years ago, so maybe it has changed. And no, a huge % of the students did not give a #### about the Greek system, (me included) but for those who did there were plenty of options, from the status-frats to others, and the guys I knew who were in frats were into the life.

I was there roughly 10 years ago. The Greeks were there for people who enjoyed them, but you certainly didn't need to go anywhere near them to have a fun and active social life.

As far as hook-up options, sure it was easier for the superjocks (I casually knew a few guys on the water polo, swimming, and hoops teams and they were getting hit on by hot women constantly), but as long as one was not expecting to date the hottest blonde in the biggest sorority, my exp was one could meet women who shared similar interests, etc. and many of them did not have boyfriends at all times, and I knew guys who were in engineering and math, where there were not many women around in class, and they still had chances.

In my experience it was very easy to meet women with shared similar interests, even some single ones, but there weren't chances with them.

Even if Ben Olson were healthy all year, I'd consider .500 a good season.

I was under the impression UCLA had had some very good recruiting classes recently. I know they had a ton of seniors last year, but I thought there was more talent than there apparently is. I see ESPN's best case scenario for UCLA is making a bowl, wow, I guess I have some reading to do before the season starts.

The recruiting class this year is reportedly pretty good. We'll see in two or three years.

any chance that boras has taken out an insurance policy on the kid? for example, if he doesn't get drafted in the first round in the next four years, he will receive X hundreds of thousands of dollars?

I can't imagine a more boring thread than the minutae surrounding UCLA football.

Norm Chow uses steroids and bets on Cincinnati Reds games.

There. I said it.
