Five takeaways from the Pirates’ Day 1 draft haul | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

1. Quinn Priester fits the mold

Tall, athletic, two-sport, right-handed prep pitcher? Yup. The Pirates have selected similar players before, most recently Braxton Ashcraft, their second-round pick last year out of a Texas high school. Like Ashcraft, Priester, the Pirates’ first-round pick at 18th overall, was an accomplished wide receiver. His high school, Cary-Grove, won the 2018 Illinois Class 6A state championship.

“We continued to follow down and stay true to our board and stay true to our beliefs and core values,” Pirates amateur scouting director Joe DelliCarri said. “Quinn definitely fit that when it came time to make the selection.”

The Pirates like multi-sport athletes (Priester also played basketball before giving it up when he reached high school) because they don’t pitch year-round, which means their arms have time to rest. Though there is no definitive formula for keeping young pitchers healthy, pitching while fatigued is a surefire way to get hurt; the Andrews Sports Medicine Institute recommends adolescent pitchers take at least two months and preferably four off from throwing each year.

“You see it in these multi-sport athletes. Matt Gorski played a lot of soccer,” DelliCarri said. “You see that as well in his movements on the grass and in the outfield. … In this group of four, we clearly see those movements that have translated into baseball athleticism very well.”

I like Priester a lot, I really hate the Gorski pick, and the other two seem sort of OK-ish but aren't really who I would've chosen.

Gorski is basically a good athlete who doesn't know how to hit at all. I'm always deeply suspicious of college players who fit that archetype, and even if he is the rare one who's capable of learning, I don't think the Pirates are the right organization to do it.

Here's hoping for better results on day 2.
