Flanagan: Seriously, a Tony Pena Jr. bobblehead night?

Meanwhile, on the outskirts of Somewheresville…a lonely Joe Zdeb sits, zdispirited.

The idea of a Tony Pena Jr. bobblehead promotion seems more than a bit odd right now considering his limited role on the team.

But the Royals have little choice but to go ahead with the promotion, which is part of “Hispanic Heritage Night” on Sept. 6.

“The decision to have a Tony bobblehead Tony Pena Jr.promotion was made back in February and March,” Royals vice president of sales and marketing Mark Tilson told me. “When you think about the Royals situation back then, Tony was coming off a very good year and was regarded around the league as one of the top defensive shortstops in baseball.

“There was really no way of anticipating that he wouldn’t be the regular starter now. And when we plan these promotions and carry them out, it’s not really performance based.”

Could just tell 'em it's Tony "83 wins" Pena Sr.

Little choice? I wonder if they they would have continued on with the promotion if Pena had been traded. Or are they basing personnel decisions around upcoming promotional events?

Seriously. What if they found a dead hooker in his locker? Would they still be going through with it?

Yeah there was, the fact that he can't hit should have clued you in.

Getting named to a promotion like this must give a guy a real feeling of power. It's like diplomatic immunity: Pena could do just about anything short of hitting .150 and stay on this team (and he is!)

Seriously, what's the lead time on an order for 10,000 bobbleheads? It's got to be a month or two, but it can't be much more. Once the art is done it seems pretty simple. OK, I went and found someone online:
Samples are made from artwork you provide. We need artwork for the front, both sides and the rear of the bobble head. You can email the artwork in .jpg format. Custom bases are also no problem. Please remember to include the design for the base in your artwork. Colors should be specified by Pantone Color. Once the set-up charge has been paid, it usually will take 10-14 days to get you a picture of the unpainted bobble head doll. Once you approve that picture, we can have our factory paint the doll. After you approve the painted sample we can start production. If you need a sample for approval, we can request it to be sent from Asia. The sample usually arrives 7 - 10 days after your approval of the picture. Set-up Charge: $150.00 per design Printed Box Set-up Charge: $200.00 Production Time: 70 days

They had options, but the embarassment of announcing and then cancelling his day seems to be outweighing a bobblehead swap. I understand the decision, as long as they're only letting embarassment dictate their promotions and not considering it in roster decisions. (To be clear: I'm not remotely implying that the team is keeping him around because of a bobblehead day. He can certainly field and run even if he hits like half a pitcher. But it appears they could have changed to another player for the bobblehead as late as June.)

I really don't get why they thought Tony Pena would be more deserving of a bobblehead on Hispanic Heritage Night than Joakim Soria??!?!?

I also don't see why you can't just make it Soria bobblehead night. Most bobbleheads don't really look like the player they are supposed to be, I'm sure no one will be able to tell the difference.

Yeah, i'm planning to be in KC for this bobblehead night. It should be hiliarious. Also, they're giving out 20,000 bobbleheads in a stadium that will only fit 27,000.

So, I wonder if Hillman will start Pena on his bobblehead night.

I'm a bit concerned about Fan Appreciation Night on the 20th of September, because don't the Royals usually lose by 10 on Fan Appreciation Night?

wonder if TPJ will raise his OPS+ above 2 before his big night.

And i'm calling it, Pena hits a home run on his bobblehead night.

This has the potential to rank up there with Ten Cent Beer Night or Disco Demolition Night.

Royals fans, a weary nation casts its eyes on you. Don't disappoint.

The Royals should bat the actual bobblehead.

Not a bad idea, but the Royals pitching rotation doesn't look that bad right now. Oh, wait, you mean start him in the field?

Terry Francona, while manager of the Phillies, gave Scott Rolen the night off on Scott Rolen T-Shirt night. Now he's got 2 WS rings. It might be in Hillman's best interests, short term and long term, to sit him.

I've got a Chris Bosh bobblehead that doesn't look at all like Chris Bosh. I wonder if it's really Tony Pena Jr.?

Based on what you're saying, you should be more concerned that you'd get a leftover Tony Pena Jr. bobblehead.

First they came for the bobbleheads, but I said nothing because I was not a bobblehead.

Then they came for the giant anthropomorphic sausages, but I continued to say nothing because I was not a giant anthropomorphic sausage...

I'm pretty sure the White Sox held an Esteban Loaiza bobblehead night after Loaiza had been traded.

Stupid, they could have included the bobbleheads in the trade. They might have gotten an anthropomorphic sausage or something for them!

The Pirates had 8 bobblehead nights this year (well, 2 are still to come), and only one was of an active player. 6 were guys from the 1970s, and Matt Capps had been on the DL for a long time when his came around. The other was Gorzelanny, who fortunately had not yet been demoted to the minors on Tom Gorzelanny Bobblehead Day (April 29).

The Dodgers should hold an Esteban Loaiza bobblehead night during the home opener next year to celebrate the end of his contract.

Don't forget Jason Tyner bobblehead night getting cancelled because he got sent to the minors first.

Leftovers from Ross Gload refrigerator magnet night. Awesome.

Tom Gorzelanny Bobblehead Day

Can you fit Gorzelanny on the back of a bobblehead jersey?

I suppose Saltalamaccha is gonna require 3 bobbleheads.

Now c'mon, somebody out there compile the all-time worst bobblehead team. Pena at SS, Tyner in CF. Mientkewicz ever have one? Womack? Ausmus?

I also don't see why you can't just make it Soria bobblehead night.

Why do people always choose bobblehead comps of the same race/ethnicity? It took until post 25 for someone to properly comp TPJ to Tyner.
   27. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: August 14, 2008 at 09:40 PM (#2903367)
Ausmus?

And how!

The Pirates are scraping the bottom of the barrel as far as historical bobbleheads - quite odd for a team with such a rich history. You can still buy tickets for Richie Zisk (8/29) and Rennie Stennett (9/12) bobblehead nights.

I spit cherry juice on my pants. There's your paradigm of internet globalization: due to the random typings of two people, a third person across the country had to wash his pants.

Rennie Stennett

The man got more hits in one game than TPJ has gotten all year -- that deserves a bobblehead.

Or, if Justin Zeth were here, he'd point out that the Pirates are purposely putting 2nd rate bobbleheads out there. :-)

I didn't think anyone else had ever done 7-7, at least in the modern era, but I stand corrected. Mega-nerd points for anyone who knew the answer without looking

Yeah, he did. As far as I know, it's one of the more expensive modern ones because it depicts him blowing a bubble. They used to want $200 for it up here in Minneapolis (even after he got traded), the most that I've seen.

can't get the tags to work, but here's a link to a picture (he's on the far left):

The City of Champions is full of people who still wish the year was still 1979. I figure that they would have a Steve Nicosia or even a Dave Parker bobblehead (with little batteries stuck to the pedestal) before having, say, Babe Adams.
