Florida Marlins’ Larry Beinfest says it’s time for starting pitchers to `step up’

This is usually the point where I scream at WFANgool…“STEPPING UP DOESN’T EXIST!”

For all the hype about the starting pitching staff, only Josh Johnson was consistently good in 2009, and the starters’ 4.57 ERA ranked 10th among 16 National League teams.

``We’ve been patient. It’s time for them as a group to step up,’’ Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said. ``The league has made some adjustment to them, so now they’re going to have to readjust. For us to be legitimate playoff contenders, we need to be in the top half [of starters’ ERA]. They have the ability, they’ve all been relatively heralded, but talk is cheap. They have to do it. We don’t want to see one good start and two bad.’’

Johnson and Ricky Nolasco will be in the rotation, with Chris Volstad, Anibal Sanchez, Andrew Miller, Sean West and Rick VandenHurk competing for three other slots. (Volstad and Sanchez are favorites if they pitch well this spring.)

``VandenHurk, more than anyone in September, improved his stock,’’ Beinfest said.

Who the hell are those guys?

Anibal Sanchez was a moderately-hyped Red Sox prospect that came to Florida in the Beckett/Lowell deal and threw a no-hitter soon after, then had TJ and missed all of last season. Ricky Nolasco was a part of the Pierre trade with the Cubs and is actually going to be awesome next season. Andrew Miller was a Tigers first-round pick (huge lefty) who came to the Marlins with Cameron Maybin and a couple others in the Miggy Cabrera/Dontrelle Willis dump. Volstad was a first-round pick that the Marlins actually made for themselves... several years ago? Sean West I have no idea and Vandenhurk has a cool name.

Upon bb-r'ing, I guess I should have heard of West as he was apparently another Marlins first-rounder in '05 along with Volstad; and evidently Sanchez didn't have TJ as he's pitched at least a little bit every season since 2006. Anybody knows what his injury actually was?

Oh man, I know that. My statement was ironic. But maybe your response was too.

We're through the looking glass here, Petunia. Hold me.

I only just now realized that Beinfest's name isn't Ben-I-fest.

Isn't it time for Marlins ownership to "step up" and prove they can run a major league ballclub at a profit without the league propping them up with truckloads of free money every season? Perhaps it's not as easy as pitching at the major league level, but then again perhaps they aren't even trying.

I want to hear Beinfest demand they take it to another level.

Nope.

and prove they can run a major league ballclub at a profit

Nah.

without the league propping them up with truckloads

Ehhh...no.

of free money every season?

Who are you, Matthew Lesko?

Perhaps it's not as easy as pitching at the major league level,

Nothing is as easy as falling in love. Nothing is as hard as falling in love.

but then again perhaps they aren't even trying.

TO THE LIMIT.

Beinfest is one hell of an operator (to use Bill Veeck's term).
