Flushing University: Good Things Happen in Threes

The Mets have already taken the first step toward such a plan, taking advantage of Thursday’s off-day to skip Maine’s former spot in the rotation. The schedule is extremely kind to the Mets between September 3 and September 12, with three off days that will allow Manuel to skip Niese entirely and to minimize appearances from the fourth starter Pedro Martinez.

By simply using the three of them with the standard four days’ rest, Manuel can pitch Santana, Pelfrey and Perez ten times in a 12-game stretch between now and the 12th. Failure to do so on the manager’s part should be a fireable offense.

I agree with his main point. There really is no good reason not to skip Niese and Pedro when the other 3 can still get 4 days' rest. I disagree with his plea to start those three on short rest, not once but twice, at the end of September. You might get away with it the first time through -- maybe -- but it will blow up in their faces the second time through. What the Mets really need to do is call up every capable arm they can on September 1 so that Manuel can use his group of limited-skill-sets relievers more effectively. It's a lot easier to use a bunch of LOOGYs and ROOGYs in good matchups if you have lots of arms to call upon.

Ned Yost is taking the opposite approach in an attempt to get each starter some rest while not having someone not pitch for two weeks or some such.

Now, the Brewers starters have been healthy and VERY good in the second half so the context is different.

Having seen too many pitchers curl up and faint on short rest I would STRONGLY discourage approach except for very specific instances.
