For Jake Peavy, baseball must take a back seat

While still dealing with the fallout of an investment scandal that cost him millions, Peavy is sorting through turmoil in his personal life. Katie, his wife of 15 years filed for divorce in October, and he has spent the offseason tending to the needs of his four sons until the legal proceedings are finalized this spring.

So when teams contacted his agent, Jeff Berry, over the winter, Peavy asked for patience and a little more time. Baseball will be his priority soon enough, but there are too many disruptions to navigate and relationships to stabilize before he can jump back into the fray.

“It hurts not to be in spring training,’’ Peavy said by phone. “I know that day is coming, but right now being a dad is absolutely No. 1. There’s no way in a million years that I could leave my boys at this time.’‘...

Peavy had to take part in conference calls on days when he was pitching—sometimes hours before taking the mound—and leave the team between outings to give depositions and meet with lawyers, FBI agents and investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission. Some of his most valued off-field relationships suffered greatly during the ordeal. “It turned my whole world upside-down,’’ Peavy said. “For the first time ever, it was hard to give my 150 percent focus, time and energy to baseball. It was such a tough year, because everything I have built and played for was jeopardized to some degree. When you’ve known people your whole life and career and they let you down and they’re not who you thought you were, it’s devastating.

Good reminder that even with all the money & glory, big leaguers often have rough personal lives.

Nothing in life insulates you from the effects of having bad luck or bad judgement in the choice of a spouse. Get that one right, and you're very, very likely to have a happy life. Get it wrong, and have kids with them, and you're going to be miserable for decades.

I bet he signs with the Rockies.

I'd like to see him sign with the Pads. Get those nine wins to take his rightful place atop the club's wins leaderboard (and supplant Eric Show in the process).

I'd love to have him back in San Diego, too! I'd prefer him just to tie Show though.

After the Giants' season ended in Game 4 of the National League Division Series, Peavy went home and was served with divorce papers.

That can't be true. Please God !

That can't be true. Please God !

Sorry AT-AT but it's true; the Giants' run of even-year championships came to an end last season.

Unfortunately I have first hand experience with this, though only 15 years of misery! Got 5 amazing kids out of it though(ages 24-15).
Now with new wife, and yeah got this one right.

That being served with papers right after the game is kind of cruel. Not sure what another day or 3 would've mattered, I'm sure the household environment was already toxic anyway.

That loss to the Cubs was ... and I don't even pitch for the Giants ! ... so bad, it ... those friggin CUBS !
And then get served ? ... Okay, you can look at like a Viking, #### it, life goes on or it doesnt !
But to get served that ####, on that day/night... that is more than cruel !

And this is now tied to the Cubs winning the World Series ! Shame on them ! Forever ! And a Curse !
No more Titles , till 4397 !

The Divorce Cubs have been officially cursed ! ATAT

Are you talking about Peavy's ex's choice here?

I have no idea where the blame lies in the particular relationship. Just making a general observation.

She probably wanted to do it sooner, but didn't want him to blame her for starting proceedings during the playoffs and then having him blame her for his poor performance.

Or simply, she didn't want to cause him additional stress during the period when he was doing his job. That would seem to be the more heartless course.
