Former Hagerstown Suns Owner at Fault in Tainted Fries Case

The former owner of the Hagerstown Suns has acknowledged that the minor-league baseball club was at fault when two patrons were served french fries doused with oven cleaner.

He must have come clean after being touched by the Dow’ed report…

Still beats Aramark.

I'm amazed that this is unrelated to the Suns' frequent promotions involving a buffet from King's restaurant.

Sometimes I feel I've got to
Run away I've got to
Get away
From the pain that you drive into the gut of me
The food we share
Seems to go everywhere
And I've lost my lunch
For I toss and turn I can't sleep a bunch

Once I ran for food (I ran)
Now I'll run from food
These tainted fries you've given
I give you all the cash I coughed up
Take my puke and that's not nearly all
Oh...tainted fries
Tainted fries

Now I know I've got to
Run away I've got to
Get away
You don't want business any more from me
To end this fight
You need someone to sue you right
And you'll think settling is okay
But I'm sorry I don't play that way

(chorus...)

Don't touch my fries
I cannot stand the way you cook
I love you though you hurt me so
Now I'm going to take Pepto and go
Tainted fries, tainted fries (x2)
Oven cleaner, tainted fries(x2)
Tainted fries (x3)

Maybe the vendor dropped their fries in a dirty oven. What do these litigious nancies want?

If you RTFA, you'd have seen:

The plaintiffs claim they ordered vinegar on their fries at a game in Municipal Stadium on April 24, 2003, and instead were served fries inadvertently doused with oven cleaner from an unmarked plastic jug.

Why weren't the Sun's concession stands using vinegar packets? It is odd that their "serious, permanent injuries" aren't fully disclosed by the article.

Making this even odder is the fact that vinegar is an oven cleaner.

We use vinegar to neutralize our oven cleaner.

I just realized that the patrons intentionally did this in order to find a reason to sue! After all, who the #### would ever eat french fries with vinegar on them?

The next dramatic turn in the case will come when the company shows in court that the oven cleaner actually improved the taste of its french fries . . .

I was surprised to find the following on Wikipedia:

OvenZAP is a brand of hard-surface cleaner primarily used for cleaning ovens. It is also used as a flavoring for starch-based foods, especially fried ones.

...

Industry legend has it that researchers, in trying to find a cold oven cleaner, found that ammonia would plasticize food spills, making them easier to remove. However, this took hours, and ammonia would evaporate in that time. Looking for a less volatile chemical with the general characteristics of ammonia, they found that monoethanolamine (MEA) had similar properties.

Unexpectedly, MEA was found to have an additional property of binding to starchy foods to provide additional flavor and texture. However, to offset a slight bitter taste inherent to MEA, as well as to minimize perceived health risks related to the consumption of a chemical plasticizer, MEA required the addition of caustic soda as well as surfactants and bentonite as an abrasive. Like most household cleaning aerosols, the propellant is a blend of propane and isobutane. The propellant form makes it easy to dispense the product in high-capacity food service environments.

Because of concern that the general public would not readily accept the consumption of hard-surface cleaners, OvenZAP was marketed solely as an overnight oven cleaner.

Wow. Whenever I find an unmarked bottle in my kitchen it immeadiatly goes into the trash and I am not very nice to the person who forgot to mark it. Forgetting to mark a bottle is a great way to get yourself fired.

Ahh brings back memories. I was cleaning my kitchen one day when I realized I had no real easy form of cleaning liquids or containers. All I had was a big bottle of bleach. So I took an empty small water bottle poured some bleach in it and then filled it with water. I used that to clean the kitchen, filling the bottle several times. Now then the whole I'm saying to myself I must remember to throw this bottle out when I am done. Of course I don't, I leave it next to the sink. Several hours pass I'm now sleeping and my girlfriend at the time comes home and wishes to take her birth control. What does she use to wash it down with? Yep you guessed by bleach bottle. She had a raspy voice for about a week because of that.

There's two sides to every story. We just don't know if the people buying fries at the game requested fries that they could bring home to clean their oven.
