Former No. 1 pick Bush hurt in another Peoria altercation

Bushmills around bar…problems arise.

Padres minor leaguer Matt Bush, drafted first overall in 2004, recently was involved in an off-field fight in which he suffered bodily harm, according to persons close to him. It happened near a pub/grill in Peoria, Ariz., across from the Padres’ compound.

Padres farm system overseer Grady Fuson said Bush, 22, is still participating in workouts at the club’s training site.

“Obviously people are going to know he was in a fight,” Fuson said. “To the extent of that fight, people are going to have to guess. How it was caused, there was support there for him.

“Obviously, there are some consequences out of this. But those are in-house.”

Fuson said there are “no comments to make” on the specifics.

Bush’s father, Danny, confirmed that his son was involved in an altercation. “But we really can’t talk about it,” he said yesterday. “I talked to the Padres people and they said don’t talk about it.”

Worst overall #1 picks, 1965-2000:

1. Danny Goodwin, 1971 and 1975 (because he was drafted there *twice*)
2. Steve Chilcott, 1966
3. Brien Taylor, 1991
4. Al Chambers, 1979
5. Shawn Abner, 1984

At this point, Bush would go ahead of Taylor, and just behind Chilcott. We'll see how his career plays out.

The 1991 draft, IMO, was the worst first round ever.

Note that I said borderline candidate, in that he will see at least a few votes go his way, and some idiot sportswriter will campaign for him. Possibly from one of those big Hebrew papers out east.

I think this is an entirely defensible contention. To think that Shawn Green is less than a marginal HOF candidate is misguided. (Mind you, I don't think Green belongs in the HOF, nor do I think players of similar career value to him belong. But those who are in his range are definitely borderline candidates and deserve to be called that.)

There are two iconic phrases from the 60's which are routinely misstated: one adds an "a" where there originally was none, and one omits an "a" where there was one.

It has long been assumed that Armstrong had mistakenly omitted the word "a" from his famous remark ("one small step for a man"), rendering the phrase a contradiction, as man in such use is synonymous with mankind. Armstrong is quoted as saying that he "would hope that history would grant me leeway for dropping the syllable and understand that it was certainly intended, even if it wasn't said – although it might actually have been."

It has since been claimed that acoustic analysis of the recording reveals the presence of the missing "a".[34] A digital audio analysis conducted by Peter Shann Ford, an Australia-based computer programmer, claims that Armstrong did, in fact, say "a man", but the "a" was inaudible due to the limitations of communications technology of the time.[35][36][37] Ford and James R. I remember when Grady Fuson left the A's for Texas, Oakland tried to stop that move. I also recall that Fuson as an Asst GM in Texas was a failure. What I didn't realize was that he's been with the Padres for 3 years. However, the Pads have had some lousy drafts in recent years -- does Fuson deserve some blame?

The big reason that the A's tried to stop Fuson's move to Texas was because he was under contract in Oakland and his move to Texas was more-less lateral. As I understand these things, it is deemed okay for a coach or front-office guy to take a job with another organization, even when he's under contract, as long as the move is upward. The A's argued that Fuson's departure for Texas was not.
