Former Oriole Luke Scott signs one-year deal with Tampa Bay

Luke Scott: Rebirtherr.

Luke Scott, the outspoken, energetic slugger who spent four seasons in Baltimore and was named the 2010 Most Valuable Oriole, has agreed to a one-year deal with the division-rival Tampa Bay Rays that includes a 2013 option, according to an industry source.

Exact terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Scott, 33, was in his final year of arbitration after making $6.4 million in an injury-marred 2011 that ended in July, when he decided to have season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. In December, the Orioles decided not to tender him a contract—he would have made at least $6 million and likely more—and allowed him to become a free agent.

There was talk that the club wanted him back on a lesser deal, but the Orioles never made a push this offseason to re-sign him.

_Exact terms of the deal weren’t disclosed._

Of course they weren't. What is this boy hiding?

Well, they'll probably be the most heavily armed team in the majors, assuming Longoria has replenished his arsenal.

There goes Obama's chances of winning Florida.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the GOP convention is in Tampa this year, no?

Coincidence?

So..without looking at numbers, not really an improvement over Damon? Fine with me. Is Kotchman still there?

Yep. The Rays have to go on like a three week road trip IIRC.

Maybe Scott was the one who took Longoria's gun and signing him was the only way to get it back.

He's being paid six million... Kenyan shillings. Which at current rates breaks down to a little less than $70,000.

Well, TB's doucheWAR has been fairly poor since Burrell left.

I like it. His expected production is maybe a tad better than what Damon did last season but I like his chances of putting that up in 2012 better than Damon doing it again.

the outspoken, energetic slugger

That's one way to put it. Think the contract requires the Rays to pay him in gold bullion?

To be fair, Tampa would have signed Hugo Chavez if he could have been a four-win player and played below market value.

If I take http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/otl/news/story?id=6395744 at face value, I actually like this guy even if I have a different view on his outspoken stuff.

With Farnsworth still on the roster? This is why WAR is a stupid stat.

Personally I prefer humbly ignorant to proudly ignorant.

I go for the genuflecting humbly ignorant myself.
Nothing like a bit of groveling in front of the umpire before each at bat, i always say.

I humbly submit I didn't check bbrefdwar before I commented, Yer right. With the Farns and Scott on the roster, we've out-douched previous lone-mega-douches Gomes and Burrell (at least Gomes hit some o' the time). Look out AL East.

TB DH's since 2007:

Greg Norton
Jonny Gomes
Cliff Floyd
Willie Aybar
Pat Burrell (/spit)
Johnny Damon (wither art thou Manny?)

And now presumably Luke Scott and the cavalcade of Maddon's "just the right guy at the right time" guys -- which has been just fine for four years.

Is it wrong that the first thing that came to my head when I saw this was of a 1980s-style action movie in which Luke Scott and Evan Longoria single-handedly fight off a inexplicable invasion by Castro?

Better still, how about Luke Scott and Eva Longoria expell all the evil housewives!

Evan Longoria will and forever always be the guy that expels the drug cartel/frees the Cambodian sex slaves/saves the hostage orphaned children from the Eastern European madman who forgot the Cold War was over.

Luke Scott would either be Bill Paxton from Aliens or the archetype foul-loudmouth-captain-guy that always gives Longo ####. Each served their purpose.
