Former Phillies reliever Todd Frohwirth dead at 54

Tragedy struck the baseball world late Sunday morning, as retired nine-year veteran RHP Todd Frohwirth passed away at the age of 54 due to stomach cancer, an illness he had been battling for a “lengthy” period of time, per Dan Connolly.

The Milwaukee, Wisconsin native was drafted in the 13th round of the 1984 amateur draft and spent his first four seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies from 1987 to 1990. In 72 relief appearances with the Phillies, Frohwirth combined to go 3-3 with a 3.95 ERA, 60 strikeouts and 37 walks over 86 2/3 innings. He is remembered and revered for having thrown “submarine style.”

He had recently become a very successful high school girls basketball coach.

Was it Bill James who nicknamed him Todd "Never Could" Frohwirth "A Damn"? Maybe kind of harsh. RIP. First Wayne Twitchell and now Frohwirth, among Phillies pitchers of passing interest from that era, though Kent Tekulve has lived 2+ years past his heart transplant.

I thought it was Todd "What hand does he" Frohwirth.

I remember him because of his dynamite 1991 season with Baltimore (1.87 ERA in 96 IP in 51 appearances). He was used as a long man, had 11 appearances of at least 3.0IP, and was great. He wasn't used until the end of May, so that's 51 appearances in the team's final 120 games.

- He had one appearance where he threw for SIX INNINGS. He gave up 4 ER in that game, which was 20% of his total for the entire year.
- He had 39 appearances where he gave up 0 ER, and four of them were at least 4.0IP.
- He pitched in both games of a double-header THREE times, and one of the times he also pitching in the game the NEXT day, too (so 3 games in 2 days).

RIP Todd. Only remember a bit of his pitching, but I remember him listing his top 5 actresses in USA Today. #5 was Bette Davis. #4 was Wilma Flintstone.
