Former Steelers broadcaster, Terrible Towel creator Cope dies

Terrible news for any Pittsburgher.

Myron Cope, the screechy-voiced announcer whose colorful catch phrases and twirling Terrible Towel became symbols of the Pittsburgh Steelers during an unrivaled 35 seasons in the broadcast booth, has died. He was 79.

Cope died Wednesday morning at a nursing home in Mount Lebanon, a Pittsburgh suburb, Joe Gordon, a former Steelers executive and a longtime friend of Cope’s, told The Associated Press.

Cope was best known for his work as a broadcaster with the Steelers, but he also did a fair bit of good baseball writing. His 1966 profile of Roberto Clemente for Sports Illustrated is one of my particular favorites.

it's too bad he became known as that clown on the Steelers broadcasts--he was an EXCELLENT writer; he wrote what I still think is the best profile ever on Jim Brown in 1964, as well as ghost-writing Jim B's first book "Off My Chest"

My wife and son got choked up when I told them. For some odd reason I married a Steelers fan and she turned my kids into Steelers fans.

I hated those Steeler teams with a passion, but like the love-Rizzuto, hate-Yankees situation, really enjoyed Cope. RIP.
