Former White Sox great Jack McDowell seeks return to baseball

Stick? Figure not likely.

McDowell, 47, is looking for work as a pitching coach or as a broadcaster—two jobs that would best suit his strengths.

“I’m kind of sifting through things,” McDowell said Tuesday morning. “I just moved to Charlotte (from San Diego) about three months ago, so I’m in a bit of a transition and trying to figure out which direction and what the opportunities are.’‘

McDowell, who won the 1993 American League Cy Young Award with the White Sox, said he’s met with a few people “to see what it’s about.’‘

When asked if there would be a possible reunion with the White Sox in some capacity, McDowell replied, “It’s not looking very good.’‘

Try the Cardinals, Orioles or Blue Jays.

I hope not as a pitcher.

Didn't some service time machinations by the White Sox cost Black Jack a good chunk of change?

Wouldn't you wait to move until you actually found a job somewhere?

Not if you don't have to live where you work

Continuing the discussion from the link in

I'm guessing his internet footprint might also be working against him.......

What is this, Horseville?

Nope, that's The Bronx.

Blown to Smithereens.

I'll never forgive McDowell for imploding against Seattle in the 1995 playoffs. It was the second time he gave us the middle finger that year.

You could me like me and put up with a 100+ mile roundtrip commute for a little over a year until you found something closer to home.

I've done this. Wasn't that bad. I learned a lot about the history of Rome via podcast.

Since I just read that Mark Mulder is trying a comeback, I thought Jack was thinking about pitching again.

I'm thinking about a comeback myself, having last pitched competitively in 1987. Threw some snowballs against the shed this afternoon.. It's cool that I actually have direct access to a baseball ops department. But I still need to add about 20-30 MPH. We'll see.

I listened to a lot of books, but the ones that I retained the most were ones on subjects I already knew like baseball and American History.

IIRC, McDowell used to write for Yahoo, but I forget if he was any better or worse than a typical ex-jock writing for some website.

Got a link? I'm in the process of painting several rooms and the Trailer Park Boys and Star Trek on netflix aren't cutting it for background entertainment anymore.

History of Rome

The guy is kind of a dork, but he gets deep into it.

Oh, I only retained the merest fraction of it. I do have a better broad understanding of the subject. Probably.
