Former White Sox pitcher Hal Trosky Jr. dies at 76

Hal Trosky Jr....

Hal Trosky Jr., who briefly played in the major leagues and was the son of the late Cleveland Indians great Hal Trosky Sr., has died. He was 76.

Mike Trosky, the younger Trosky’s son, says his father died Friday at a hospice house in Hiawatha after being diagnosed with lung cancer in August.

Trosky was born in Cleveland and played five seasons in the minors after being signed by the Chicago White Sox out of high school.

In 1958, he pitched two games for the White Sox. The Iowa Baseball Hall of Famer stopped playing after the 1961 season.

Just a few days after his late father's 100th birthday, too.

Hal Trosky, Jr. or Leon Trotsky, Jr.?

Huh. I had no idea Trosky had a son who was a ballplayer.

His SABR bio is pretty interesting.

Thanks for posting that bio, Vlad. I had wondered why Trosky quit pro ball so young; he was still improving as a pitcher and rising through the minor leagues. But he had a family to provide for and prospects in the insurance business, so riding buses for peanuts was not as attractive as it might be today, when millions await the fortunate. RIP and condolences to Trosky's family.

My pleasure.

At one point he was struck on the head, after which he thought he was Eartha Kitt.
