Fortunes ‘shift’ in worst way possible for Mets’ ace Jacob deGrom

More silliness.

“You make a pitch and feel like it’s an out and nobody’s there, I was frustrated,’’ deGrom said later. “I think anybody would be, the goal is not to give up runs. I thought I was out of the inning.’’

Because Frazier had to guard the runner, he wasn’t able to cover more of the shortstop area, so the shift was not optimum — even though Shift Apologists will never admit that.

“I did go in and look and he does not hit the ball there very often, I think it’s been a year since he hit a ground ball to short, so I think that’s the mindset behind it,’’ deGrom said of Carpenter.

DeGrom jammed the lefty-hitting Carpenter, who was able to fight the ball off his hands with a one hopper towards short.

I guess it is a lot more obvious when the shift doesn’t work.

This was the first time in baseball history that a weakly-hit grounder went for a hit.

Mets are last in the MLB this year in shift runs, -9. Source FG

2018 they were +11 ranked 18th

2017 +3, ranked 24th

This may not be a strength for them

I listened to a soccer podcast (Football Weekly) where one of the panel made a great point. He noted that if you follow the conventional wisdom and it doesn’t work it’s no big deal, if you do something different and it doesn’t work it’s a failure of the new plan even if it makes sense.

I thought it really clarified the issue well. If Carpenter hasn’t hit a ball there in a year not playing someone there is the right thing to do.

DeGrom’s frustrating night kicked into another gear in the ninth. With rain coming down, umpires halted the game, but Pete Alonso implored them to play on and the tarp was rolled back up when the rain softened.

The delay was nine minutes. Edwin Diaz came on and allowed two runs as the Cardinals tied the score, 4-4.

Emphasis mine...what the #### is Alonso doing? You have a two run lead and it’s an official game, shut the #### up and let the rain close it out for you.

This implies cause and effect, as in the umps listened to Pete Alonso, a rookie. Or am I missing something? Umps don't listen to their own mothers.

First, Harvey was their ace. Then it was Syndegaard. Now it's DeGrom. And then, something negative happens.
