Foulke planning comeback

Noooo…the Foulke scene might be coming back!

Keith Foulke, a World Series hero for the Red Sox in 2004 who abruptly retired in February on the eve of spring training with the Indians, is planning a comeback, his agent said last night. Johnny from Burger King, consider yourself warned.

“He is definitely going to play next year,” Foulke’s agent, Danny Horwits, said by telephone. “He just needed to get healthy.”

About a month ago, Foulke went to noted orthopedist Lewis Yocum, who shaved a bone spur in his pitching elbow, Horwits said. The procedure was relatively simple, Horwits said, the type requiring a relatively short rehabilitation period. Foulke, who lives in Glendale, Ariz., will begin throwing next month, Horwits said.

Thrilling. I'm sure teams will be beating down his door with the way he pitched in '05 and '06, and the way he left the Indians high and dry in the spring.

Good for Foulke. I am not sure he will enjoy as much success as when Beck returned, but it will be fun to watch. There should be a few teams interested in him.

I really don't think anyone will hold the Indians thing against him. They signed him knowing he might not be able to pitch, he decided he couldn't, and retired because he didn't feel right having the Indians pay him for arm problems he got pitching for another team.

Yeah, it was actually pretty classy of him to walk away from $5 million instead of taking the money and knowing he wasn't going to be able to pitch.

I'm just saying it doesn't seem like there's going to be a huge market for a guy who's been out for a year and hasn't pitched well since 2004. And I'm a little grumpy as an Indians fan because it means I've had to sit through Joe Borowski trying to close games.

somebody will give him a non-guaranteed but otherwise reasonably lucrative contract. If he looks decent in spring training, why not spend a few million on him, given the upside?
