FOX: Robothal: Indians acquire Lofton from Rangers

The Indians have reached an agreement on a trade with the Texas Rangers that will bring center fielder Kenny Lofton back to Cleveland, where he spent nine years of his 17-year career, FOXSports.com has learned.

Word elsewhere is that it’s Max Ramirez for Lofton.  Several Cleveland radio stations report there will be a news conference this afternoon.

One would assume this pretty much guarantees Lofton will be inducted into the Hall Of Very Good as an Indian.

Update from Indians.com: It’s official.

This is super awesome.

Also, Cliff Lee to Buffalo, apparently. Which is also super awesome, since I hate him now.

I guess Hal Trosky's going to wait even longer to get #7 retired.

So does Lofton become the tribe's regular LF?

Kenny did a nice job for the Rangers this year--better than we could have expected. Should help the Indians in a number of ways. Not sure what Jon Daniels is thinking of. Catcher is the deepest position in the Texas organization.

He'll platoon with Jason Michaels.

Max Ramirez is only nominally a catcher. He won't stick there. Jon Daniels traded for his bat.

Does this make Grady Sizemore a middle of the order hitter?

I really doubt it. Can't imagine they'll do anything to mess with Grady right now, in the middle of a pennant race. But stranger things have happened, I guess.

#8, probably not. I would initially say bat Lofton second, but that starts off with two lefties. We'll see.

"Dan Lee tips his cap to Cliff Lee." I just noticed that. Very nice.

[shrug]

something tells me this is going to be the biggest trade before the deadline.

worst. trading deadline. ever.

Crap. Good move.

Bye Cliff, have fun playing pinochle on the bus with John Koronka.

Good effing riddance.

Nice to have Kenny back, too. I'm hoping there's another deal in the works -- Francisco for Isringhausen or Dotel.

Crap, I had my hopes up for a Dotel for Asdrubal Cabrera deal.

Barring a blockbuster, I don't see AstroCab going anywhere at this point.

Rickey Henderson holds the record for postseason stolen bases, with 33 (in 60 games). Kenny Lofton is second, with 32 (in 84 games). Lofton missed the '05 playoffs, and was SB-less in 2006 for Los Angeles, largely due to having just one hit.

The Rickey is in danger. All the cosmic forces of good must align to either:
a) bump Cleveland from the playoffs;
b) put Lofton into a full body cast by September 29;
or
c) allow Lofton to set a record by going 82-for-82, leading the Indians to a championship with 82 triples.

Each of these outcomes is equally acceptable. Another stolen base would be Beelzebub's ultimate triumph.
   17. Banta Posted: July 27, 2007 at 06:36 PM (#2457838)
Eh, there's still a decent chance that Rickey will be the Mets starting leftfielder for the playoffs.

Well, that will sit well with Kenny. Yep, nothing he likes better than being platooned.

I read that Cliff Lee get sent down and that since he has a multi year deal, he must clear waivers. Why wouldn't a team claim him? His contract is not outrageous, and he'd be worth taking a flyer on. Really his numbers aren't terrible except for his last four starts. Am I missing something?

Yeah, that really is surprising, and given the weird Aaron Laffey situation it seems the Indians were expecting someone to claim him, but when they didn't, they gave him another shot last night.

His decline was really been amazing to watch.

With Phillips gone to Cinci, and Lee to AAA, Minaya will need to see Sizemore turn into Jason Tyner and his Colon trade will finally be vindicated!

Steve Phillips said Cliff Lee was the best lefty in baseball about two years ago, prompting HR's somewhat famous response "He's not even the best lefty on his team!"

Steve Phillips is stupid.

Well, [platooning with Jason Michaels] will sit well with Kenny. Yep, nothing he likes better than being platooned.

I thought I saw something earlier this week than saying Lofton had a no-trade, and had to agree to where he was going to be traded (and that Cleveland seemed to be one of the few places he's move out of CF for), so if my memory isn't failing me, he's apparently okay with it in this case.

It was just LAST year, after Lee's strong April. I will never forget that moment, I almost fell over in my chair. What a maron.

Sure, Kenny would be okay with moving from a team that is going nowhere to one that has an excellent chance of making the postseason.

Steve Phillips also thinks that Jason Tyner is the best first round pick in Mets history.

I don't know what happened with Lee: He looked like he was going to be a good third/fourth starter, then the injury happens and the wheels just come right off.

For at least a week. If not two.

Is that a portmanteau of maroon and moron?

I know I'm entering the discussion a little late here
But what's up with Max Ramirez?

Why is he stil in A ball?
His numbers make him seem like he could be mashing at least AA pitching by now
