FOX: Rosenthal - Dodgers join Brewers in pursuit of Sabathia

The Brewers aren’t the only team pushing hard for Indians left-hander C.C. Sabathia. The Dodgers also are heavily in the mix, according to major-league sources.

However, the Dodgers’ bid for Sabathia is complicated by their pursuit of Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson as a replacement for the injured Rafael Furcal, sources say. To get Wilson, the Dodgers would need to trade the Pirates some of the same players that the Indians want for Sabathia, leaving Los Angeles with a choice of one deal or the other.

While the Dodgers might not offer a prospect better than Brewers Class AA left fielder Matt LaPorta, their proposal for Sabathia would include three players, sources say. Class AA right-hander James McDonald, Class AAA shortstop Chin-Lung Hu and third baseman Andy LaRoche are among the Dodgers’ prospects likely drawing consideration form the Indians.

By acquiring Wilson, the Dodgers would signal that they might not intend to keep Furcal, whom they probably consider too big of a physical risk to re-sign as a free agent.

I wonder if the Dodgers would like another go around at Julio Lugo in lieu of Wilson? The Sox would probably not want too much and then the Dodgers would still be able to go after Sabathia!

Wow, with three starters who've finished in the top 3 of Cy Young voting this decade, plus Kershaw, plus Billingsley, plus snagging the #1 Japanese import pitcher, I bet the Dodgers weren't expecting to be in this sort of market at the beginning of July. This never would have happened if Brad Penny were still alive.

Where are you Randy Wolf?

[EDIT: Actually, they have FOUR starters who've finished in the top 4 of Cy Young voting this decade. Though not much is expected of Loaiza, compared to Lowe, Penny, and Schmidt if he was healthy.]

Am I crazy, but why not just add Broxton and we'll put Jhhhhonny in the deal as well. That way the Dodgers don't have to waste top prospects on Wilson and can instead waste top prospects on Jhhhonny. Seems like a win-win for Colletti and me.

Okay, if I'm Jim Bowden, I'm asking myself why Ned Coletti isn't next on my hit-list of "GMs who I've swindled and who have subsequently lost their jobs." Krivsky, Bavasi, with Minaya perhaps due next. Coletti's damn near the last moron left on the list. My point is that Bowden ought to be trying to sell them on Cristian Guzman (.315/.342/.432, OPS+ of 104), who is putting up a better season than Wilson (.312/.351/.369, OPS+ of 94), is younger, and has a similar contract situation. Sure, Wilson has one more year on his contract (plus a club option), but Guzman is cheaper and could probably be signed for even less than the $4 million he's making as is. Defense? Wilson may be a flashy glove man, but Guzman's 2008 RZR of .842 is identical to Wilson's. And his OOZ rating of 30 is twice as good as Wilson's at 15.

Dammit Jimbo, make it happen. Use whatever bamboozle-whammy it is you laid on Krivsky, Minaya and Bavasi and get Loney or Kemp from Coletti.

I imagine that Hu is a big part of both the proposed Sabathia deal and the proposed Wilson deal. It's no particular secret that the Indians are no longer enamored of Peralta and that they would like to get a young SS. I'd guess James McDonald would have to go in either of those deals, as well. The main question is what else the Dodgers would have to give up for Sabathia. Hu and McDonald would probably be enough for Wilson.

Jim Bowden has gotten GMs to agree to crazier deals. I think you're right, but I wouldn't put it entirely past him.

Some boob calling in on the radio yesterday suggested getting LaRoche, Kemp AND Kershaw for Sabathia.

My guess is that the Dodgers will wait to target Sabathia on the FA market.
