FOX Sports: Fraley: It’s no shame to be stressed

“Phlegmy Revenge: The Dick Ruthvendetta” (a team in my fantasy league) is destroying baseball!

Dusty Baker said there is more pressure in the game now than at any time in his career, which began when he broke in as a 19-year-old outfielder with Atlanta in 1968. He listed factors ranging from increased salaries to the proliferation of fantasy leagues.

To counter the pressures, Baker relates what famed NFL coach Bill Walsh told him in a private conversation shortly before his death. Maintain a balance in your life, Walsh told Baker. Keep everything in perspective.

Easier said than done.

“That is very tough to do in our game,’’ Baker said. “It’s a high-pressure world. Sometimes, they (anxieties) wake you up you up in the middle of the night. They do with me, and I’m not even playing.’‘

Playing can be the easy part, because the body takes over. It’s all the other times that can cause problems for everyone in the game.

to the proliferation of fantasy leagues.

Dusty Baker is worried about fantasy leagues? Really? He sucks at managing those too?

Fantasy leagues are leagues where Dusty doesn't ruin pitchers. <ducks>

Maybe the fan base is a little more abusive on a personal level to an "underperforming" player? "Arroyo, you suck. Your WHIP is killing me."

Jackie Robinson didn't know what pressure was. He never had to play in an era of fantasy baseball leagues!

How much of the average fan's perception of a player is based on his fantasy baseball performance? I'd say more than we think.

I read it. Made me wonder why they couldn't rotate each of the 30 teams through with an extra 3-day break, much like the NFL teams get with their bye week. If the schedule makers were a bit more aggressive about scheduling the domes and warm-weather teams the first week and last week of the season, and if they were a bit more flexible about the post-season schedule (e.g. taking advantage when the series don't go the distance, or just scheduling fewer mid-series off-days, which would also re-emphasize rotation and bullpen depth), they could easily accomodate a couple extra breaks, which I know would help the players decompress, and which would probably also elevate the level of play slightly, as some of the guys who are too good to sit out the minor, nagging injuries could get themselves healthy...

Do we even have a bbtf fantasy league? You'd think we'd have several, what with 90% of the users living in their mom's underwear, or something like that.

Anyway, I'd join one.
