Fox Sports: Reds unsure of Gomes’ role—5:23 p.m.

One scout who watches the Reds regularly suggested they would do well to find a 2010 role for outfielder Jonny Gomes, as well.

Gomes, who is arbitration-eligible, hit .267-.338-.541 with 20 home runs in only 98 games. He’s regarded as a defensive liability but committed two errors in 70 appearances as an outfielder.

“They’ve got to bring Jonny Gomes back,” the scout said. “He can hit, and his defense wasn’t that bad. He got a bad reputation from somewhere, but I think he’s very adequate. He made some catches and plays when I saw him, and he’s a super makeup guy. They’ve got to have a spot for him on that team.”

how much can he really be looking to make in arbitration? and who's better than him? i guess there's votto or heisey or alonso or frazier, but on a one year deal, gomes is better than any of the alternatives, plus he's good trade fodder come july.

worst case scenario, he sucks a little, eats some cash, and gets traded for a 49 year old hall of famer.

The World Series may still be fresh in your mind, but MLB GMs are already focusing on next season. Thankfully, Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi have all the latest gossip and buzz. Note: All times listed are ET.

Halos more interested in Granderson than Jackson — 8:34 p.m.

8:34 p.m.? 5:23 p.m.? Really? The top of the page shows it was updated at 8:35 PM. So why write "blah blah blah 8:34 p.m."? To impress us with the speed at which you can upload your story onto the website? Done in 60 seconds.

What is the point of Fox Sports including the supposed times in the headlines? To show that the "gossip" is truly the "latest"? Or that the "buzz" is the buzziest? To me, it just looks dumb.

If Repoz uses Google, you may not have to worry about Fox Sports much longer, bob.

Gomes isn't Kevin Reimer bad, but he's pretty bad.

I love Gomes. He'd be a nice fit on the A's if the Walt and Dusty show can't figure out how to use him. Lord knows we could use a mediocre-OBP slugger.

I don't know how bad Kevin Reimer's defense was, but I do know that Gomes' is really really bad. Just in case Billy Beane is reading BTF looking for ideas, let me provide some balance with a "Don't do it!"

Justin:

Kevin Reimer is the modern day equivalent of Leon Wagner. Drunk. With a broken leg.

Is Oakland not allowed to use a DH next year?

I'm assuming Cust is back. Maybe that's not a safe assumption. Whoever it is, the team only needs one DH.

Great year for Gomes last year after he hadn't shown much in a few seasons. He started in Louisville but came up relatively soon and in the second half he was mostly done being platooned. It would hurt to lose his power because there isn't a whole lot in that lineup. Plus, as a righty he adds some balance.

Brandon Phillips is about to see his career drive into a ditch. I have no basis for this other than gut feeling.

5.8% career walk rate?
Falling ISO each of the last 2 years?

I actually wouldn't mind Phillips if he wasn't treated like the team's best player and/or an all-star. Treat him like the slightly above average 2b, but who still has value, like he really is.

Yea, there's talk he might get dealt to the Mets or non-tendered. Even if they keep him, having Gomes DH against lefties and play the field now and then against righties wouldn't be the worst idea in the world.

Agree 100%. And his contract isn't particularly onerous for an above average 2B. But they need someone better to be hitting cleanup.

But there is no DH in the NL.

No offense to Jonny Gomes, but I'm about as excited to see minute-by-minute updates about him as I would be to see Safetysuit's concert tour schedule.

I mean who cares about the exact minute he moves?

Fox Sports: Reds unsure of Gomes’ role—5:23 p.m.

What? At 5:22, everything seemed set. Can't a guy go to the bathroom without everything falling apart?
   18. Tripon Posted: November 24, 2009 at 08:14 AM (#3395321)
Cust would be the poor's man version of Adam Dunn at the fraction of the cost of Dunn. Of course the problem is that he might be the homeless version of Dunn and that would probably be too much to pay for Cust if that happened.
