Francisco Cervelli joins Venezuelan protests and pleads with others to do the same

For weeks, Rivero and Cervelli scanned Instagram on their cell phones and shared scenes from anti-government demonstrations. Videos of tear-gas canisters flying into crowds, of police brutality, of Maduro dancing while military vehicles advanced protesters in the streets. The players were active in the conversation but weren’t sure what impact they could have from afar.

Before the Pirates played the Milwaukee Brewers on May 5, Cervelli spoke with Hernan Perez during batting practice. They started to hatch a plan. They got together after the game and began contacting some of the 70 other Venezuelans currently on active rosters. They called. They texted. They asked players to send videos voicing their support of the protesters.

Three days later, Cervelli posted a video on his Instagram page, which has more than 181,000 followers, that featured messages from 13 players from three teams. The caption, translated, read, “THAT’S ENOUGH! THE CRIES OF MILLIONS OF VOICES FOR VENEZUELA.”

“All the Venezuelan athletes in the world, we’ve got to make noise,” Cervelli said Friday. “The people in my country are lonely. They are fighting, and no one is helping. People born in Venezuela are killing their own people. It’s crazy. They shouldn’t have the kind of power to do what they’re doing. It’s been 18 years [of Socialist Party rule] already. It’s out of control.”

It’s been 18 years [of Socialist Party rule] already.

I'm shocked that the glory of Socialism hasn't ushered in an era of peace, love, and prosperity for all involved.

Irrelevant domestic comparisons aside, that article is quite moving, even if it's old news to anyone who's been keeping up with Venezuelan events. One small excerpt:

Other major leaguers have reached out and asked Cervelli how to get involved. Cervelli said he’s not trying to be the leader. For years and years, he hardly followed politics at all. He shrugged and said, “I don't have interest in that kind of stuff. I'm just talking as a Venezuelan human being, man. The human rights there are zero. No one is doing anything. We need help.”

Cervelli’s parents live in Venezuela. He and his girlfriend, Migbelis Castellanos Romero, who was Miss Venezuela in 2013, have shipped packages to their families Venezuela. They sent rice, beans, deodorant, medicine and more — common supplies that have gotten so scarce and expensive, Cervelli said, “you have to find them on the black market.” Rivero said he has sent money and first-aid materials to his parents and relatives in San Felipe, Venezuela.

Al Powell's speech loses something in the translation.

I had no idea Cervelli was Venezuelan. I don't know why I was so sure he's American...I don't think I know anything about him outside of his play on the field.

It sure doesn't seem like the status quo in Venezuela can last much longer.

I also assumed he was of Italian heritage.

He is. His father was an Italian immigrant to Venezuela. He's played for Italy in the WBC.

That may have been it.

Of course, it's easy to forget that there was plenty of European migration to Latin America at the same time as the 19th century and early 20th century migration booms in North America. I recall reading that from 1850-1940 Argentina actually had more European migrants than Canada - which would likely surprise most Canadians (especially those living in the prairies who draw a kind of regional identity from the migrations of that period).

As it happens a group on campus just started a four-part viewing of The Battle of Chile that started today. Some pretty amazing footage.

So if he gets tear-gassed or billy-clubbed does it affect his contract?

As soon as the government runs out of people's money to steal by force the next step is totalitarian oppression followed by massive economic dysfunction and severe shortages. Then comes the riots and further repression.

#7 When I was in Argentina it was full of people of Italian and Germanic descent. I was amazed.

Argentina is 97 percent white. Whiter than Vermont. Whiter than Iceland. Probably whiter than anywhere.

You don't need to go to Venezuela to get your butt kicked by thugs. Erdogan's "bodyguards" roughed up peaceful protestors in D.C. today while the cops picked their noses. Plenty of dysfunction to go around in this world.

Wrong thread.

I would have thought the whitest place I've been to would be Newfoundland, as it was super ####### white, but I forgot that Labrador is about half First Nations/Metis/Inuit. So it's 94% white. It turns out the whitest place I've been is Prince Edward Island, 97% white.

I guessed Eastern Europe would be pretty white, and the first place I looked, Estonia, is 99.8% European.

It turns out the whitest place I've been is
