Francona in Cleveland to interview for manager job

Just looking at Terry, he’s obviously had a lot of success,” Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said on Thursday afternoon. “He’s won two world championships. He’s also had success in developing players.”

Neither Antonetti nor Francona were immediately available for comment in regards to Friday’s interview.

As things currently stand, Francona and Alomar are the only publicized candidates for the role formerly held by Manny Acta, who was relieved of his duties on Sept. 27. Cleveland is hoping to name a new manager soon, possibly making a formal announcement as early as Monday or Tuesday.

Now that would be interesting. As much as I criticized him, I'd love to see what he'd do in another situation.

I'd lvoe to see Tito get another shot but this seems odd. Giving Alomar the job then taking it away from him seems like it might not go over well with the fans.

2 - If fans couldn't realize the difference between being truly given the job and being the interim guy for a week, they were going to crucify the FO anyway. No loss.

Seems like Francona could pick and choose his job, and I don't see why he'd take Cleveland. Seems like a stagnant franchise with some okayish but not great young talent, but a mediocre farm system, and an unwillingness to spend much to bring in talent. Seems wiser to hold out til the Cubs get good, wait til the Rangers finally ax Wash, or Leyland retires. Unless he's just chomping at the bit to manage now, I don't think its a great place to land .

And yea, seems like the job should be Alomar's. You never give the job to a popular interim unless you plan to make them the full-time skipper.

As of 4:43 today Alex Speier of WEEI in Boston is saying Tito is getting the job. It's "according to numerous reports."

Godspeed, Tito.

Just submitted one from CBS citing Robothal. They're talking about it on MLB tv.

I'm guessing that the original Tito may have something to do with Tito Jr. taking this job. Not saying it's the only reason, but there aren't enough apparent reasons otherwise for Tito Jr. to do it.

Best of luck Tito. Here's hoping you and the Tribe both pick up WS win No. 3 while you're there.

Pro: It's a weak division that isn't impossible to contend in and it's a calmer work environment than Boston.

So does Bobby Valentine get the ESPN gig back? Might be a ratings boost from teaming Bobby with Schilling, but there could be liability issues when they try to kill each other.

Tito had his best years with the Indians and I always picture him wearing a Cleveland uniform on his baseball cards.
Oh wait this is his kid, never mind.

Seems like a good reason to wait out Leyland.

I'm sure they'd both sign waivers.

For enough money Schilling would agree to let Bobby Valentine hunt him through the halls of ESPN.

Would Valentine use an elephant gun and dress up like the guy in the pith helmet from Jumanji? Cuz that would definitely boost the ratings for BBTN.

Is everyone else shocked that Sandy Alomar Jr. didn't get the job?

Anyway, this makes Francona the fourth person to manager both the Phillies and the Indians, after C. Fuqua Manuel, Pat Corrales, and Steve O'Neill (1891-1962).

The last Indians interim manager, Joel Skinner, was the son of Bob Skinner, who in 1968 was promoted from San Diego Padres manager to Phillies manager after the team decided the Gene Mauch era was over. Under the elder Skinner the team fell from .500 to last place. He started 1969 as the manager but was fired himself after 108 games.

That was Bob Skinner's only managerial experience other than one game in 1977 during his long stint as a Padres coach.

Was Francona popular enough in the Red Sox clubhouse that some players might try to follow him to Cleveland? I know Youk is from Ohio (albeit Cincy), and he'd be a good fit with the Indians.

He was popular, but I don't think popular enough that anyone would take less money just to play for him. All else being equal salary-wise though, sure.
