Frankie’s back: Pirates give Liriano minor league contract

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Francisco Liriano is back with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The 35-year-old left-hander agreed to a minor league contract with the team on Monday that includes an invitation to big league camp.

He pitched for Pittsburgh from 2013-16, going 41-36 with a 3.67 ERA and 659 strikeouts in 107 starts. He earned the victory in Pittsburgh’s win over Cincinnati in the 2013 NL wild card game, allowing one run over seven innings.

The Comeback Kid comes back one more time.

It's highly unlikely that he ends up the Opening Day starter, but that's about all you can discount.

With players like this, I wish the player could sell an option along with their services.

In a fringe guy, like Liriano is at this point, he is much more valuable if he can go up and down all season. If he would have taken the option year, he probably would have gotten guaranteed big league money and slightly more than he signed for in this case. It would benefit both teams and players.

Two notes:

His ERA+ as a starter last year was just about league average for a starting pitcher (95). But - he gave up some many unearned runs that his bb-ref WAR was nonetheless zero.

Rumor is that he'll be used as a reliever this time. Here are his platoon splits from last year:
vL: 98 pa - .170/.255/.261; vR: 488 pa - .270/.369/.455
While that's much more extreme than his career averages, it's easy to envision him being solid in that role.

Oh, barring a collapse of his stuff - he's making the roster. This is about preserving a 40 man spot until later (in my naive opinion).
Why would he want to ride the shuttle anyway? He's earned a lot over his career - I imagine this is a better scenario for him.

3--career split is .219/.294/.303 so totally in line what folks can expect. Not Haderesque of course but pretty good (just being a Crew fan. I get that Liriano has done this for a much longer time)
