Freddie Freeman expected to miss significant time

There’s no official word as to whether or not Freddie Freeman has a broken wrist, but the expectation is the Atlanta Braves star first baseman will miss significant time.

As a result, the Braves are discussing options at first base moving forward, including outside options. One potential in-house fill-in, Adonis Garcia, is on the disabled list with an Achillies injury, which makes the need to look outside more pressing.

There’s still no word from the Braves, but there was real concern and an ominous feeling Wednesday night after Freeman exited the game in the fifth inning after taking an Aaron Loup pitch off the wrist. Manager Brian Snitker removed Freeman from the game, replacing him with Jace Peterson at first base and Johan Carmago at third.

The Braves tried out Ryan Howard earlier at first base, but he was released after slashing .184/.238/.263 in 42 plate appearances for Triple-A Gwinnett.

James Loney is an interesting name available as a free agent. Loney, 33, was recently released by the Detroit Tigers after hitting .229 with a .387 on-base percentage in 62 plate appearances for Triple-A Toledo.

well, that sucks for Freddie and the Barves. He was having a monster season.

Man, everybody is getting hurt this year.

Just as an FYI I'm still feeling fine.

There are no obvious promotion candidates in the minors. Maybe Lane Adams going to LF and move Matt Kemp to first? Ugh.

Oh boy, a .229 hitter at the AAA level.
   6. dlf Posted: May 18, 2017 at 11:49 AM (#5458388)
#5 Yeah, but I wouldn't want to rush, for example, Albies or Ruiz and harm their development on a club that is, what about a .450 true talent edition even with FF. What are the other options? Tuiasosopo just so I can learn to mangle his name? Activate G-Braves manager Damon Berryhill? The Braves have some good prospects, but they really lack the Quad-A filler that is usually available for this type of situation.

I would say that is less "slashing" and more "waving feebly".

I hear Ryan Howard is available...

Mitch Moreland has hit .186 over the last month and may be prise-able away from the Red Sox, I should think.

#9 - I doubt it, at least right now. He was signed mostly for his glove and if the Sox are currently rostering Josh Rutledge and Hanley has played all of 3 innings at 1B this year, Moreland isn't really expendable.

This is tragic. He was having such a great season.

Well, .186 isn't super, but Moreland's had a lot of stretches like that, so I wouldn't say tragic exactly.

Source: #Braves’ Freeman has a fractured left wrist. Expectation is that he will miss at least eight weeks.

I agree WRT Albies, but Ruiz is in his second season as AAA third baseman, and has lately been tearing it up with the bat. He's regarded well with the glove. So seems like a perfect time to try it, moving Garcia to first, or if he's lame, then shoot him and get a cheap option from somewhere. If he really struggles against lefties, spot Camargo or the new guy they just got from the Twins.

I hear Alphonso Soriano is available.

And Mike Crudale. He's available too.

With the Blue Jays hitting 7 Braves in this series, the last of which knocked out one MLBs hottest hitters for 8-10 weeks, and in addition to Pillar & Baustista's ass-hattery, Toronto batters would do well to step lightly into the box tonight.

Source: #Braves’ Freeman has a fractured left wrist.

So when he comes back it would be reasonable to expect that he won't be back to full power for a time, perhaps a long time.

@19, did anybody ever get a consensus on that? I've seen 6 months, I've seen a year, heck I've seen 18 months. Didn't it take Tulo like 2 years?

What's frustrating is that we don't really have any good idea how much power Freddie has. He hasn't been 2 years removed from a hand injury since his rookie year seems like.
   21. Walt Davis Posted: May 18, 2017 at 07:06 PM (#5458969)
Old as he is, Alfonso Soriano is still probably a better bet than Alphonso Soriano.

Shame about Freeman who was passing Rizzo and challenging Goldschmidt as best 1B in the NL.

I do suspect his OPS+ this year is inflated as we don't have a PF for the new stadium yet -- it's about 10.6 R/g in Atl, 9.5/g on the road but the hitters are not doing much at home while the pitchers are getting rocked and it's just 37 games total so who knows?

Freeman broke out of his slump last year when he consciously worked in bp to hit the ball hard at the shortstop. Look up his spray chart since June 13 of last season.

He's a great hitter, period. Get well soon, Freddie.

Ryan Zimmerman is healthy again and demands some respect until his next injury.

How about Alfonso Ribeiro?

If that is serious, I doubt seriously the Nats would trade him, especially to another division team.
