Frustrated Ortiz rails against error call - ESPN Boston

If the scorer changes the call, should the pitcher then stop the game and start yelling at the scorer?

The official scorer, Bob Kelly, after viewing a couple of replays, charged Mauer with an error. When the inning ended, according to several reporters watching, including Kyle Brasseur of ESPNBoston.com (I’d gotten up to use the restroom), Ortiz could be seen yelling at the press box, making a thumbs-down motion several times to indicate his displeasure with the call.

I love Papi, but I do wish someone would explain to him how douche-y he comes off when he does this stuff.

Compared to smashing the hell out of a dugout phone in another team's park because he didn't like a strike called against him, this seems relatively tame.

"I thought people were supposed to have your back at home"

No, the Official Scorer works for the league, not the Red Sox. Having your back at home is a great way to get fired.

Really? I thought the teams hired the scorers. Learn something new every day I guess.

And seconding #1.

Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere, but isn't there still a Net Nanny on this site? If so, why does Jim keep the Nanny in place if he's comfortable tagging articles as bullshit? Seems odd.

No class at all. Papi gets way too many free passes for this type of behavior. If Derek Jeter ever behaved that way, the trashing that would take place on a site like this would defy belief. You'd be hearing about it right up until his Hall of Fame induction.

Meanwhile, Reilly, Lupica, and Madden would call for the official scorer to be hanged, drawn, and quartered.

For real. It's one of the pettier things a baseball player can do.

bill buckner was pretty well known to be a griper about offical scorers

al oliver as well

most of the line drive contact guys who couldn't really run would somehow feel shortchanged by the scorers and make a fuss over error calls
   11. Barry`s_Lazy_Boy Posted: June 19, 2014 at 12:33 PM (#4730497)
Maybe Fenway should have a dugout phone (home dugout only) for contacting the official scorer. Then Papi can simply have a phone conversation to discuss the situation, rather than wildly making gestures from the field.
   12. esseff Posted: June 19, 2014 at 12:35 PM (#4730503)
Well, there is a right way. According to Rule 10:

A player or club may request that the League President review a judgment call of an official scorer made in a game in which such player or club participated, by notifying the League President in writing or by approved electronic means within 24 hours of the conclusion or suspension of such game . . .

By the way, an interesting thing about this rule is that, 15 years after league presidents ceased to exist, it still cites them as the ultimate authority.

How many official scorers have been fired for no-calls on balls rolling under Jeter's glove?

I'm pretty sure the dugout phones do connect to the press box. I recall hearing stories over the years of guys calling up to the press box.

As long as Ortiz keeps hitting clutch HRs like he did yesterday, I'll forgive any number of personal-stats related b*tching on his part.
   23. Papa Squid Posted: June 19, 2014 at 01:54 PM (#4730627)
RTG, it's funny, because former hack Marty York tweeted something yesterday calling Molitor a phony, something like "If voters knew real Molitor, he wouldn't be in [the Hall]."

I wonder if Molitor ran over his dog or something back in the day. And even if he did, why would that DQ him from being in the HOF? Angry sportswriters, man.

Geez, I called him "douche-y," two other Sox fans seconded the sentiment, a couple backhanded shots were taken that looped in his phone smashing, words like "poor form" and "lame" were tossed about, his hissy fit during Tito's presser was mentioned and TFA article compared him Will Clark for god's sake--is that a free pass in your book, Captain?

Yes, they do. And the team is not allowed to ##### to the Official Scorer. There is an appeals process.

I'm sure they're not supposed to but I feel like I recall hearing a lot of stories about guys doing it. I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time that's for damned sure).

EDIT: Not saying it's OK. Ortiz or any player shouldn't be worrying about this stuff during a game obviously.

I've been out of the loop on porn movies. Have MLB Official Scorers replaced pool boys and pizza delivery men as the occupation du jour in adult entertainment?

What was the name of that Indians pitcher a few years back who was literally a porn star? He could probably answer that.

Yes, after one of the players pranked him into thinking John Henry and Theo Epstein asked for a scoring change to take away an RBI from him, he interrupted to voice his displeasure with the front office to Francona, who was in the press conference at the time.

Talking to Ortiz about scoring changes that affect his stats is very much like touching Adrian Beltre's head. They wildly overreact to the slightest thing, then life goes on.

Well, it's not like Ortiz reads BBTF. So directing these constructive criticisms directly to Ortiz may be a better approach.

Under that reasoning, maybe the old athletic supporter ought not to get so touchy about criticisms of Jeter.

I think this kind of thing demonstrates that he is definitely NOT on steroids. He's hitting .40 below his career average and is on a team option for next year. Oh, he also has three rings.

I don't believe that is correct.

He has a contract for 2015, and a team option for 2016 that vests based on Plate Appearances

I was the official scorekeeper for a Pac-10 (back in the day) baseball team for five years back in the late 1970s-early 1980s. In all that time, only one visiting player ever complained about a ruling I made, when I called a ball he had hit an error when an infielder bobbled a ball and he was safe at first. It was John Elway, when he was playing for Stanford. Elway sent the student manager up to the press box to ask me to change it to a hit. I talked to the infielder who bobbled the ball after the game, who told me that he would have got Elway if he had handled the ball cleanly, and that it should be an error. An error it remained.

"He's a self-centered, 'roided up assclown, just like his disgraced old teammate from several years back." True that. As usual a whiney selfish douch*bag. (And it was an error to boot.)

Joe Torre just told Ortiz to put a sock in it:

"Official scorers have a job to do, and by their very nature, their decisions don't make everyone happy," Torre said in a statement released by MLB on Friday. "But everyone in our game deserves respect. I hope that David will meet that standard going forward, because I don't share the same views that he expressed."
