Future of Cashman Field in Las Vegas questionable

Scott Adams, director of the city redevelopment agency, says Las Vegas wants the Triple-A 51s to have a new home, and feel if the 51s ever left town they would not come back.

“They’d be gone for good,” Adams said.

Stadiums and facilities are a big deal for minor-league baseball teams because they affect affiliations with major-league clubs. The Los Angeles Dodgers ended an eight-year affiliation agreement with the 51s this year. The Toronto Blue Jays quickly signed with the team, but the agreement ends in 2010, the same year the 51s’ lease is up at Cashman Field.

Don Logan, president and general manager of the 51s, said the team hopes to “hang on” in Las Vegas until it can get a new stadium.

Las Vegas “knows how good minor league parks have been for other cities and what it could do for this one,” Logan said.
