Gallardo promoted to the majors…..

Because of the Capuano injury, Yovani Gallardo got the call to join the Brewers for the series against the Twins.  Gallardo will likely be the last option out of the bullpen this weekend and then make a start against the Giants next week.  Congratulations young man and good luck!

Courtesy of the amazing Jeff Sackman and the minor league splits database some interesting Gallardo numbers:

In 37 innings at home Gallardo has given up a slugging percentage of .220.

With men on base batters are hitting .179 with a slugging percentage of .295.

12.86 strikeouts per nine innings and 3.28 walks per nine innings.

Must be nice being a Brewers fan.

Good luck, Yovani. I predict he'll struggle with his control and have trouble pitching deep into games, but should pitch well and will get his strikeouts. If he gets 100 IP the rest of the season, I'd expect 48 ER, 85 K, 45 BB, 13 HR.

It has its moments.

1993-2004? Not so much.

yeah, but does he have a pop-up wing/spoiler when his fastball reaches a certain speed?

The thing I don't get is why you call Gallardo up TODAY, if you might need a bullpen arm over the weekend.

Since they're down a man in the pen due to Villaneuva's emergency start, I don't see why they don't call up one of the Nashville relievers for a few days (Aquino and Sarfate are already on the 40-man, if you don't want to mess with the 40), and promote Gallardo right before the projected Monday start.

Now, if Gallardo is needed, he'll pitch over the weekend and Villaneuva will get another start - which certainly isn't the worst thing in the world - but if they want Gallardo to get Monday's start, why is it being done this way?

Maybe they want him to spend a few days with the team to get acclimated and let Maddux supervise his throwing before sending him out there. Why make two moves when you can make one. On the other hand, I don't think they should have called him up at all.

Man, and people call ME grouchy. Ha, ha.

C'mon. Enjoy the moment. He faces Barry and gets to tell his grandkids in forty odd years. And after enjoying the wine, women, and song of The Show he goes back to Nashville and dreams of his return within two weeks. Does that make you happy?

I'm not too exercised about this. As I've said before, I'd be OK with them bringing him up for good right now if they put him in long relief for the rest of this season, but that sort of thing isn't really done (outside of Minnesota) anymore. And Carlos pitched so well in his emergency start. If they just needed a body, why not let Carlos take the starts and put Yovani in the 'pen? Well, I suppose they know that Cap won't be out very long, so maybe they're trying to keep Yovani on a regular schedule and don't want to mess that up by yo-yo-ing him in the bullpen. That makes sense. I tend to want to coddle 21-year-old starters putting up 12 Ks per 9, but I'm willing to admit Melvin & co. might know more about this than I do. :-)
