Garland rejects D-Backs’ offer

Looking for stability in their rotation, the Diamondbacks made a run at innings-eater Jon Garland this week, but their offer to the right-hander was rejected on Thursday.

The length and value of the offer is not known, but it had a short shelf-life that expired Thursday.

That the club was pursuing Garland is likely an indication that it feels the need for more certainty at the back of its rotation. Brandon Webb, Dan Haren and Doug Davis are proven commodities, but the Diamondbacks don’t want to ask too much of young right-hander Max Scherzer.

Beyond Scherzer, unproven right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Billy Buckner are the most likely candidates to fill the fifth spot.

This is the first Garland rumor I've heard ... been wondering when he would surface. If it was a decent offer, he probably should have taken it.

Finally a Jon Garland thread! Jon Garland is alive! The total lack of discussion about him does not indicate that he has vanished!

It's amusing how there's this hierarchy of free-agent starters. They usually get listed in order from greatest to least, too.

Word. I also don't understand the lack of interest by the Mets, among other teams. Does Garland have some sort of cloud of suspicion regarding PED or something?

And in what way is Doug David-->"Proven Commodity" a good thing? He hasn't been a world beater in Arizona, and is recovering from cancer. Shouldn't Arizona have pushed harder for Lowe? Their rotation doesn't instill much confidence after Webb-n-Haren.

According to Fangraphs, his velocity actually improved slightly in 2008 compared to his previous two years.

The term was thrown around a lot to describe Derek Lowe when he signed with LAD, and that turned out pretty well.

Basically, if a guy consistently posts 200+ IP over the course of several seasons, he's doing something right.

The Mariners are 0 for 3 with innings-eaters currently on their roster. I guess Washburn has been pretty good, but he was clearly better on the Angels.

I thought Jake Westbrook was a good example, but he was never really a free agent, just re-signed by the Indians.

Innings are on the long list of things CC Sabathia is willing to eat, so we'll see how that turns out.

Garland was average in the first half of 2008 and gawd-awful in the 2nd half of the season. He had a .322 BA against post ASB. He had an ERA of 5.99 and gave up 102 hits and 20 BB in 76 innings post ASB. Shoot, looking at his splits from last year is amazing. He had ERA's over 6.00 in the following AL parks last year:

Fenway, Arlington, Safeco, Camden Yards, McAfee and Comerica. He got rocked away from the Big "A".

Anyway, he looked bad at the end of the season - not sure I'd offer more than a Lohse-like 1 year plus option deal. If he doesn't like it he can take his 4.90 ERA somewhere else...

I'm not sure Garland is a very safe bet to ever pitch 200 innings in a season again.
My gut tells me the Dbacks dodged a major bullet, with "Russ Ortiz v.2" written on it...
