Garner earns an ‘A’ despite his poor team - 6/7/01

The more I read and see Phil Garner, the more I like him. Maybe the Red Sox can trade Jimy Williams, Mike Lansing, Darren Lewis, Troy O’Leary and $10 M to the Tigers for him.

To put the "Joe Falls gives Phil Garner an 'A'" story in perspective consider that in 1996 the Tigers finished 53-109 and Falls voted for Tiger manager (at the time) Buddy Bell for AL manager of the year.

Well, let's see, now that Felipe Alou's been fired and the Twins don't stink, I guess somebody has to be the "good guy who just doesn't have the horses.", and for some reason everyone overlooks Bruce Bochy (who's actually won a pennant, but never mind.)

I do remember that about 20 years ago, Joe Falls was my favorite columnist in The Sporting News. Of course, I think his writing was better back then and I was 9 years old.
