Gattis Plays Left Field And Homers Twice, Simmons Stays Hot, And Hudson Completes Rehab In Tuesday’s Atlanta Braves Minor League Action

Evan Gattis has no business being in the Carolina League. He had another phenomenal day, cracking out a pair of home runs and driving in 5. Through 16 games, he has a .424 average, a .507 OBP (seriously, he’s getting on base more than half the times he comes to the plate, that’s insane), and a .898 slugging percentage good for a 1.405 OPS. In addition to his great day at the plate, today was a big day for his future, as is was the first time in his career he’s played in the outfield.

All your Evan Gattis are belong to us.

Seriously people. Evan Gattis is the awesome sauce.

I just learned about Gattis from the BA "hot sheet" thing.

Did the AJC story on Gattis from spring ever get linked on the newsblog? It's a pretty great piece, though I'd like to see the writer get a bit more in-depth with Gattis himself, and I am a tad skeptical that Gattis went to rehab for "booze and marijuana".

He's no Dylan Bundy (13 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 BB, 21 Ks).

I misread the headline as "Gaetti plays left field and homers twice..." and thought Gary Gaetti was making a comeback. Left disappointed.

Joe Gaetti was still floating around a few years ago. I don't know if there's any relation.

I thought "Gattis" was a nickname for "Gary Pettis."

Seriously, other than "that is just the Baltimore way", do they need any other evidence that Bundy might be at least 1 level too low in his current placement? I can see some reasons for keeping Gattis where he is (working him into a new position, if he is not an MLB-level catcher), but Bunday? Don't they want him to practice working from the stretch, too?

Joe Gaetti was still floating around a few years ago. I don't know if there's any relation.

Joe is engaged to Dan Gladden's daughter Ashley.

Dan Gladden couldn't be more pleased that his daughter, Ashley, will get married to Joe Gaetti, son of his 1987 Twins World Series champion teammate Gary Gaetti, in December in Scottsdale, Ariz.

"He has got a great gal," Gladden said.

Gladden said he and Gaetti were "pretty close" teammates. He figures Ashley and Joe probably were 7 or 8 years old then.

"I think they reconnected at our '87 (Twins) reunion," Gladden said. "The kids came back to town (for the 20-year reunion in 2007). Ashley was a student at the University of Arizona. It was funny because that weekend they all ran around in the Twin Cities - they were 21 - and were able to frequent some of the places Mom and Dad went to.

"And on the flight home, when Ashley was going back to school in Tucson, Joe was on that plane because his minor league team was in Tucson. So they saw each other again, and somehow they ran into each other again when he was in Tucson."

The wedding is Dec. 1. Gladden knows well the family his daughter will marry into.

"No surprises there," he said.

Gary and Joe? Yes - father and son. Pops is now managing in indy ball, fwiw.

Gattis is no catcher, not yet. Cool story, though.

Time to move Bundy up, yeah.

Those are eye-popping numbers, but he's 25 at High-A. I look forward to next week's update, in which he totally dunks on two fifth-graders.

His opponent yesterday for the Red Sox farm team was Matt Barnes who is off to a dominant start as well (21 innings, 9 hits, 0 runs). Keith Law mentioned in a chat the other day that the Sox had him working on some stuff and that's why he was doing it there and I wonder if the Orioles similarly have Bundy working on something that is better done at Single A than a level up.

I also don't know who the Orioles employ as minor league pitching coaches. Their best may be the guy at the team Bundy is with and they don't want to break them up.

But the way he's throwing Bundy might be better than about 7 guys on the Baltimore staff today.

Delmarva plays in the middle of nowhere. I would imagine that any coaches the team wants to keep happy are with a different affiliate.

I think everyone understands that Gattis is a man among boys, offensively, in the Carolina League. He was assigned there simply because this is his second year back in organized ball since his post-high school sabbatical, and they're not rushing him even though he's 25. I wouldn't be surprised to seem him skip AA and go straight to AAA Gwinnett once he settles into the defensive role as an OF. Gwinnett has no "prospect" players to push out of either C or LF.

It's going to be funny when Evan Gattis out hits Bryce Harper.

Barnes is 21 years old and this is his first year as a pro. 34 K's in those 21 innings by the way.

It's going to be funny when Evan Gattis out hits Bryce Harper.

Then it's already funny, because he is already doing that. Of course he is six years older and playing three levels below Harper, but whatever.

I am pretty sure it did, because I know I've read it before. Not 100% positive that I was linked to it from BTF, but I am pretty sure.
