1. Lassus Posted: January 29, 2010 at 12:14 PM (#3449530)Or end for the Mets..
Again? Forty-plus years old, hacked-up right arm, requires three-quarters of a year's rest to pitch four months with piddling results. That's really dangling a carrot, isn't it?
This is pathetic. Not only is Minaya a scapegoat, he has to make a fool out of himself, too.
and this statement reminds me of kevin bacon in the riot scene of animal house screaming ALL IS WELL up until he gets run ovah
it is actually possible that the mets will be even worse than the astros. and here i am thinking about that Jackal and smirking...
i can guess EXACTLY where you would "apply" (ahem) kitana
and then it will be mrs H doing the neck stabbing thingy
On pitching: "There's not a big difference between our guys and some of the free agents that were out there this year."
On Gary Matthews Jr.: “Well, you’re talking about a guy who signed a $50 million contract for five years, a guy who’s a switch hitter, a guy who can play all three outfield positions… I just thought, to get him for the amount that we got him, if you look around, it’s hard to find good defensive shortstops, catchers and center fielders… Is his defense in center field what it was a couple of years ago? No, but he’s got good enough defense, according to our scouts, and we feel he’ll be able to go get it in our ballpark.”
All the scouting reports are saying that Delgado isn't mobile enough to play first base anymore. They are saying that he's literally limping out there. I don't think it is a mistake not to be interested in Delgado anymore. The mistake is not being interested in a guy like LaRoche.
Either the Mets win 90 games or Minaya is gone. I think that's clear.
It's like Moore talking about Yuniesky
and a whose old team prefers to pay him $20m of that NOT to play.
You know, last year, Moore was taken by surprise when his trade for Ynuiesky was widely criticized, and I think Omar was taken by surprise to the reaction against Sarge lite
and the Pirates were taken by surprise by the reaction to when they signed operation shutdown...
"according to our scouts"... "According to our baseball people..."
That's what you hear when a GM/President/CEO has effed up because they didn't due their homework beforehand- or when your due diligence consist of talking to yes-men in an echo chamber.
I have no doubt that the day he made that deal Omar thought it was a great deal, wow Gary Matthews, an everday CF for just Stokes and 1.5/per.
The problem is that Matthews by all accounts is no longer a viable CF - he'll be 35 has a 93 career OPS+ and who's hit .248/.325/.383 over his last 3 years- that's a player who if he's FA you might sign to a minor league contract or give him a non-roster invite- if you're desperate/feeling charitable. That's the player Omar is getting, the player he THINKS he's getting doesn't/no longer exists.
Agreed
So this is essentially the same team that was projected to win 88-90 games last year - Bay in place of Delgado, and that's about it.
The "only" difference being that Santana, Reyes, Beltran, Oliver, and some others are coming back from injuries (and Beltran not quite yet). And Pelfrey, Wright and some others somewhat unexpectedly stank.
It's not completely out of the realm of possibility that all of these people could magically return to being their 2008 selves and the team could succeed. It's not the way I'd run a ball club, but I guess it's reason enough to watch for the first few weeks and see if everything clicks.
I haven't read anything new from a few weeks ago, but if that's the case I agree. If it's "he's limping now, but improving" I think they can afford to wait until the end of March to make a decision one way or the other. Nothing left out there right now, unless they want to push hard on Branyan and pay him a bit more than he'll probably be worth. Which isn't the worst idea, but i suspect the line between him and Murphy in 2010 won't be that thick...
Yeah. This is why we all ##### about Omar so much- most of his moves show you he has no intention of learning to evaluate talent on his own. Hence Alex Cora. And the hot love for Benji Molina, who was at one point a good defensive catcher.
I'm probably not the only one who'd rather have Jim Edmonds than GMJ. And he was free.
Minaya has the same problem Phillips did- he takes what should be a strength- high payroll- and turns it into a weakness. A cash-strapped team doesn't go into 2010 spending $5 million on Francouer, or give Luis Castillo a 4-year contract.
Does that mean we should be expecting a sex scandal involving the Mets front office?
Only a Mets fan could find this difference to be negligible.
Indirectly, we've already had one. Thanks Steve Phillips! There is now precedent. Maybe Omar was more concerned about Adam getting into his pants than into his job.
Edit: And by hope, I mean Mets fans should be prepared to have Kevin Towers as a GM.
EDIT -- I see where Gamingboy beat me to it.
1 - Dan Evans
2 - Kim Ng
3 - Kevin Towers
4 - DePo
5 - John Ricco (yes, Ricco. An unproven commodity, true, and yes, supposedly the one responsible for Franceour's NYC address, but he'll bring Baumer with him, and that guy impresses the hell out of me.)
I like to think of it as Jeff Wilpon and Omar as Dr. Forrester and TV's Frank, and we Mets fans as Joel (or Mike, if you roll that way) and the Bots.
Would it be a huge shock to see Pelfrey and Perez turn it around this year? Or to see wright hit 30 HRs? I'm not putting money on it, but it's not the most insanely unlikely thing that could happen. Let me put it another way- Delgado hit 38 HRs in 2008, during a season when most people were calling for the team to just outright release him. There are a few guys on this team who have that in them. The role-players are pretty weak, the bullpen is kinda sucky, and they have a couple of big holes in the lineup. But the core of the team from 2008 is still pretty well intact, and other than Castillo, no one is at the age where you'd expect a huge drop-off. Well, Tatis, if they're really counting on him as the everyday 1B...
Honestly, the 2010 Mets are probably a tad better with Molina on the team than not. Minaya's offer to Molina was not a bad one. I didn't want to watch Molina on the Mets for aesthetic reasons.
I agree that he'd be better than what they have, but I assumed that the Molina money would be used elsewhere, rather than just pocketed. It remains to be seen what they'll do. Omar sounds like he's set, but that could be a negotiating tactic too. There's some decent-tasting scraps left on the table. IMO, it's a bad idea to pay $5 million for a player who's a virtual lock to post a sub-.300 OB%, even if that player is a catcher or a defensive whiz at a crucial position. Also agree re: the "aesthetics" of Benji. Not a fun player to watch. And has always struck me as someone who overvalues his own contributions, which hasn't been helped by racking up counting stats in SF.
Are you crazy? There's nothing funnier than watching him try to beat out a grounder.
Do you think that now, or did you think that when he was trying to beat out grounders for the Jays? Scary thing is he's gotten older and bigger since...
I actually did think that then. For my wife, it was her favorite part of watching the games - Benjie Molina huffing and puffing down the baseline in a desperate attempt to win a race he knows he's going to lose.
What's replaced that now? Does she have a fetish for dudes with only one functional shoulder? At least the other Alex Gonzalez was nice to look at...
Would he stretch to reach the base, even when the ball had already beaten him by 6 steps?
