Gerrit Cole shuts down the mighty Yankees, and is about to become a very rich man

NEW YORK — The short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium has gotten the best of several pitchers over the years.

Yet Houston Astros righty Gerrit Cole — arguably the greatest pitcher on the planet these days — was able to withstand the dreaded 314 sign and the mighty Bronx Bombers on Tuesday night.

He didn’t have his best stuff by any means. But that’s what makes him the best in the business. He can keep putting up zeroes on the scoreboard without it.

“He wasn’t as electric or as sharp as usual,” a scout in attendance told Yahoo Sports. “But he was still able to win. And that’s what makes him great.”

All day long, will he biddy-biddy-bum?

5 years, 200 million. That's my guess on the money truck.

It gives him a yearly salary he 'deserves' should he continues his pace, and for a number of years that should be palatable to one of the Big Money Clubs.

I'd say 6 year, $218 million - that will give him the highest AAV and total for pitchers, I believe.

And I hope that money all comes from Arte Moreno's bank account.

My money (well, not my money) is on the Angels signing him. Gonna miss him.

I hope the Angels sign him instead of adding multiple players and creating some depth. They still haven't figured out that stars and scrubs isn't working for them and I hope that continues.

I don't think free agency is the place to create depth, though. In other words, if they're going to create depth, it's going to be by trading one of their few young hitting prospects for a young pitcher or two, and signing Cole won't keep them from doing that. If they're going to spend in free agency, the only place it makes sense to do it is on the no-doubt elite guys. Spending it on the middle tier guys ends up as heartache as often as not (probably more often, actually). I'd rather they sign one Cole and trade for two guys than sign three guys from the level below.

What I REALLY hope is that Moreno completely opens up the wallet and agrees to sign Cole and at least one other guy from the tier below (Bumgarner, Wheeler, Odorizzi, etc.). But Cole makes too much sense for them. They've lacked a number one starter since Weaver's decline. I feel like the last three or four years, they've gone on extended runs of losses where the offense has gone cold and they don't have a guy who can come in and get a 2 - 1 victory to stop the bleeding.

Was just looking at Cole's stats and thought "why in the world do people think Jacob deGrom is a shoo in for Cy Young?" I will never get used to the Astros being in the American League.
