Giants, Bumgarner lose ace’s long-awaited comeback game

There is truth in the notion that even if Madison Bumgarner is not at his best, he is better than most. So consider Bumgarner’s first big-league game in more than eight months Tuesday night a good down payment on better days.

Bumgarner showed some rust as he threw 82 pitches and still held the Diamondbacks to two second-inning runs over six innings, blending nicely into a rotation seems to have turned a corner the right way.

Kind of amazed that the Giants are hanging in there, and Bumgarner is a big weapon to get back. It's still really hard to see this team sticking around the playoff hunt all season, but they've made it through more than a third of the season.

Everybody is hanging in that division. 4.5 games between first and last, only 2 game difference between 1st and 4th.

And Hunter Pence is back!

They left 21 on base last night. At one point the bases were loaded with no outs and they couldn't get a single damn run out of it.

Box score says they left 11 on base last night

Ah, the guy who did the write up on McCovey Chronicles either messed up or made a typo then. It sure felt like that many.

Lots of bases loaded in the last few innings

Depends how you count LOB. Team LOB was 11 but if you sum the individual batter LOBs you get 21. So load the bases with no outs and get three pop-ups, that's 3 team LOB but each batter had 3 LOB as well. The box scores at include (and sum) indiv LOBs then report team LOB down below. Posey "left" 6 runners on and the Giants had 21 by that counting. Take your pick as to which is more meaningful. If your point is that batter after batter failed to advance runners, then individual LOB is certainly defensible.

Obvious example -- out out single single walk out is hardly embarrasing and may not even be a problem if the pitcher was the last out. But bases loaded out out out and no runs is clearly much more embarrassing. Both are 3 team LOB which seems misleading while the first is 3 indiv LOB and the latter is 9. On the other hand, batters make outs all the time so I'm not sure the embarrassment ratio is really as high as 9/3.

From Tango's 2010-15 RE matrix, bases loaded, no outs is about 2.3 runs with each out costing you about .75 runs ... so bases loaded, 2 outs is about .75 RE. So that does come out to a 3/1 embarrassment ratio.

With 1 runner on, the first out costs you about .4 runs (less if he's on first, more if he's on second); with two runners on, the first out costs you about .6 (less 12-, more 1-3); with them loaded, it's .75. For 2 outs, the corresponding averages are about .3, .5 and .75.

(On average, blah blah blah)
